Role overview
As we continue our growth here at Hastings Direct, we’re now looking for a couple of Major Loss Claims Handlers, handling Catastrophic Injury. You’ll be part of a dynamic and forward-thinking team who are on a journey to become the market-leading large loss team in the country. We have exceptionally strong technical capability within our department (and we’re extremely proud of that!) as we’re passionate about developing our colleagues from a technical and commercial perspective. And because of this, we often have a quicker development journey than many other places!
Job details
- You’ll need to have demonstrable experience in:
- Proactively managing your own portfolio of high-value complex injury claims with a financial handling authority of at least £3m – with any claims handled outside your agreed authority limit being referred in accordance with our referral process
- Driving early and speedy resolution of claims by engaging with customers, insurers, legal and medical professionals, and any other stakeholders to resolve claims efficiently – ensuring all new and internally reallocated claims are reserved within our SLAs
- Providing coaching, mentoring, and training, as well as acting as a technical referral point and mentor for our wider claims handling teams – driving a commercial view through referral replies and utilizing these to enhance claims handling expertise
- Carrying out technical audits and recording your findings, identifying and highlighting any knowledge shortfalls or trends, and providing recommendations on how to rectify these, sharing feedback in a constructive and appropriate manner
- Working alongside the Seniors in the team and getting involved where required, such as assisting in the organization of our Bi-Annual Tech Forum and undertaking various strategic projects to ensure that we as a team continue to evolve and stay a step ahead of industry trends and performance
- Maintaining Reinsurer confidence by liaising with them in a professional and timely manner, ensuring claims are reported and regular updates are provided in accordance with our Reinsurance treaty

Essential skills/experience:
- Substantial knowledge and experience of settling claims in excess of £1m (including litigation) with current ownership of a claims handling authority of at least £3m
- Strong indemnity and liability knowledge, with an understanding of the Civil Procedure Rules, Serious Injury Guide, The Rehabilitation Code, and litigation procedures
- Excellent problem-solving skills coupled with a proactive approach to work – able to work under your own initiative and prioritize your own workload
- Strong communication skills – able to demonstrate a high degree of influencing and negotiation skills
- DIP CII Qualified or progress towards would be desirable but not essential
