Major Projects Estimator
Capita is recruiting a Major Projects Estimator to support the delivery of highways and infrastructure projects across North Tyneside. This role plays a critical part in the pre-construction and bidding phase, producing robust cost estimates, commercial proposals and submissions that enable Capita to secure and deliver complex highways schemes.
Working closely with senior leaders, quantity surveying and delivery teams, you will provide expert estimating and commercial support across a range of infrastructure projects, ensuring proposals are commercially sound, compliant and competitive.
This is a fixed-term role, aligned to the delivery of a defined programme of major works.
Job Description
What you’ll be doing:
- Preparing detailed cost estimates, budgets, cost plans and commercial proposals for major highways and civil engineering projects
- Developing fully priced Bills of Quantities and/or activity schedules
- Supporting governance and approval processes, including commercial and risk inputs
- Reviewing drawings, specifications and data to produce accurate take-offs and cost models
- Engaging with suppliers and subcontractors to obtain pricing for labour, plant, materials and services
- Evaluating tender returns and comparing commercial submissions
- Supporting value engineering activity in collaboration with project and delivery teams
- Assisting with pricing of variations and compensation events in line with NEC contracts
- Managing workload effectively to meet bid and pre-construction deadlines
- Working collaboratively across estimating, commercial, design and delivery teams
What we’re looking for:
Essential experience and skills
- A qualification in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, or similar
- Proven experience working in an estimating or commercial role within construction or infrastructure
- Strong understanding of:
- Construction cost planning and estimating
- Bills of Quantities, specifications and contract documentation
- Typical construction contract terms and conditions
- NEC forms of contract
- Ability to build accurate estimates, budgets and commercial proposals
- Strong numeracy, literacy and analytical skills
- Good organisation and time-management skills, with the ability to work to deadlines
- Confident communication skills and the ability to work effectively with stakeholders
- A full UK driving licence

Desirable experience
- Highways or infrastructure project experience
- Knowledge of CDM regulations and relevant legislation
- Understanding of project management processes
- Experience supporting pre-construction and bidding activity
