You've mastered the basics, month-end is second nature, balance sheet reconciliations don't scare you. You're studying ACCA or CIMA because you know your career is heading somewhere bigger.
This is an opportunity to join a growing business where finance is valued, not viewed as a back-office function. You'll work closely with an experienced Financial Controller and CFO, taking ownership of a broad management accounting role while building the skills needed to move into commercial finance and business partnering.
What you'll be doing:
- Preparing journals, accruals, and prepayments to ensure an accurate and timely close.
- Completing balance sheet reconciliations and investigating any variances ahead of Financial Controller review.
- Supporting budgeting and forecasting by producing meaningful variance analysis and explaining movements against budget and forecast.
- Producing KPI reporting and supporting the preparation of monthly management accounts and reporting packs.
- Preparing and submitting VAT returns accurately and on time.
- Overseeing the accounts payable and credit control processes, resolving queries, and maintaining strong financial controls.
- Preparing payroll information and supporting documentation for review.
- Reviewing and processing employee expenses in line with company policy.
- Supporting the year-end audit by preparing documentation and responding to auditor requests.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
