Team Overview
The Business Intelligence Manager is responsible for leading and developing a globally distributed team of Business Intelligence Engineers who design, build, and support enterprise Business Intelligence and Data Warehouse solutions. This role has accountability for the current on-premises SQL Server 2019 data warehouse estate, while leading the investigation and delivery of a strategic modernisation programme, including transition to cloud-based and AI-enabled analytics platforms such as Microsoft Fabric and/or Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
As part of a global Business Intelligence and Data community, the role will collaborate with international stakeholders and technology teams to evaluate how cloud technologies, AI, intelligent automation, and advanced analytics can improve platform scalability, data quality, operational efficiency, and insight delivery.
This role reports into the Director, Business Intelligence.
This is a hybrid position and involves regular performance of job responsibilities virtually as well as in-person at an assigned TU office location for a minimum of two days a week.
Role Overview And Core Responsibilities
Leadership & Global Team Management
- Lead, coach, and develop a team of Business Intelligence Engineers across the UK and India, operating as part of a wider global technology organisation.
- Create and sustain a high-performing, inclusive team culture that encourages collaboration across geographies, time zones, and cultures.
- Set clear objectives, manage performance, and support career development and capability uplift.
- Act as a role model for quality, accountability, and continuous improvement.
BI Platform Ownership
- Own the design, development, maintenance, and enhancement of enterprise Business Intelligence and Data Warehouse solutions.
- Ensure BI platforms are stable, performant, scalable, secure, and aligned with business requirements.
- Act as a senior technical escalation point for complex BI and data platform issues.
Cloud, AI & Modernisation Strategy
- Lead the Business Intelligence modernisation initiative, including:
- Assessing the current on-premises BI architecture
- Evaluating cloud-based data platforms and deployment models
- Investigating the benefits of AI, machine learning, and intelligent automation to support modernisation, including improved insight generation, data quality, and operational efficiency.
- Define and communicate clear recommendations, roadmaps, and business cases for cloud and AI adoption.
- Partner with architecture, security, and data governance teams to ensure modernisation is secure, compliant, and aligned to enterprise standards.

Stakeholder & Global Collaboration
- Act as the primary Business Intelligence representative during business and data-related incidents, ensuring clear ownership, prioritisation, and effective communication.
- Work closely with global technology, infrastructure, and support teams to diagnose, coordinate, and resolve BI and data platform incidents, minimising business impact.
- Provide clear and timely updates to stakeholders during incidents, translating technical issues into business-facing information.
- Collaborate with technology product owners, architects, and development teams on new features, enhancements, and platform changes.
- Partner with business owners and analyst teams to capture requirements, define priorities, and ensure BI solutions deliver measurable value.
- Engage with global data and technology communities to align standards, tooling, and best practices across regions.
Governance, Quality & Ways of Working
- Ensure adherence to relevant statutory, regulatory, and data governance requirements (e.g. Data Protection Act).
- Champion Agile delivery, DevOps practices, automated testing, CI/CD, source control, and coding standards.
- Maintain high standards of documentation, operational processes, and data quality.
Required Knowledge And Experiences
Qualifications & Experience
- Degree-level education (or equivalent experience) in a relevant discipline.
- Track record years’ of experience in Business Intelligence, Data Engineering, or a related field.
- Significant hands-on experience with SQL Server–based BI platforms.
- Advanced understanding of information management practices, including:
- Data modelling
- Information lifecycle management
- Master data management
- Business requirements gathering
- Experience working within Agile delivery environments.
Leadership & Behavioural Skills
- Proven experience leading diverse, distributed teams in a global environment.
- Strong coaching and mentoring capability.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage technical and non-technical audiences.
- Strong organisational, planning, and prioritisation skills.
- Methodical, quality-focused, and delivery-oriented.
- Able to influence, build consensus, and operate effectively at multiple levels of the organisation.
Technical Skills
- Advanced expertise in:
- T-SQL and SQL Server (2019)
- SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS)
- SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) and Reporting Services (SSRS)
- Power BI and enterprise BI tooling
- Strong experience with:
- Data warehouse design (e.g. dimensional modelling)
- REST-based APIs and data integrations
- Automated testing for BI and data platforms
- Knowledge of NoSQL technologies (e.g. MongoDB) is advantageous.
- Experience or strong exposure to cloud data platforms, particularly Microsoft Fabric and/or GCP, is highly desirable.
- Awareness of how AI and advanced analytics can be applied within modern data platforms.
