Join us at Boots as an Assistant Engineering Manager in Nottingham, Beeston.

The Role

The Assistant Engineering Manager – Building Services (AEM) is responsible for the leadership, performance, and compliance of building services engineering teams within a warehouse and distribution environment.

The AEM provides direct line management to the Senior Building Services Technician and Building Services Technicians, ensuring the effective delivery of both planned and reactive maintenance, while maintaining safe, reliable, and compliant site infrastructure.

The role is accountable for operational continuity of critical building systems, contractor management, and alignment of engineering activity with warehouse operational priorities.

The AEM plays a key role in decision-making, escalation management, and continuous improvement, supporting site leadership in delivering throughput and safety objectives.

What You’ll Be Doing

In this role, you will:

  • Line manage the Senior Building Services Technician and Building Services Technicians
  • Set clear expectations, objectives, and performance standards
  • Conduct performance reviews, coaching, and capability development
  • Ensure appropriate resource planning, shift coverage, and workload balance
  • Ensure maximum uptime and reliability of all critical systems:
    • HVAC systems
    • Electrical distribution and lighting
    • Dock levellers and doors
    • Fire systems and life safety systems
    • Plumbing and utilities infrastructure
  • Ensure full compliance with UK regulations including:
    • Electricity at Work Regulations
    • Fire Safety Order
    • Legionella ACOP L8
    • PUWER (where applicable)
  • Ensure safe systems of work:
    • Permits to work
    • LOTO procedures
    • Risk assessments and method statements
    • Lead incident investigations and corrective actions
  • Contractor & Supplier Management:
    • Approve and oversee third-party contractors
    • Ensure safe, compliant, and high-quality delivery
    • Manage contractor performance and service agreements

What You’ll Need To Have (our Must-haves)

  • Strong technical understanding of HVAC, electrical, and infrastructure systems
  • Operational Awareness - Deep understanding of warehouse operations and service impact
  • Maintenance Strategy & Delivery - Experience managing both PPM and reactive maintenance
  • Ability to use KPIs and CMMS systems effectively
  • Senior Building Services Technician or Engineering Supervisor
  • NVQ Level 3 / City & Guilds (Electrical, Mechanical, or Building Services)
  • ILM / Leadership or Management qualification

It would be great if you also have

  • Proven ability to lead, develop, and manage engineering teams
  • Confident in high-pressure, time-critical environments
  • Works cross-functionally with operations, H&S, and leadership teams
