The Role

The Manager of Clinical Trial Managers II reports to the Clinical Study Leadership (CSL) SMAO Director and serves as people leader, responsible for:

  • Directly managing a cohesive team of 15–17 Study Management Associates (SMAs).
  • Guiding front-line staff for best-in-class study execution.
  • Fostering a globally inclusive, innovative, empowering environment through skill enhancement, strategic thinking, and continuous learning.

Key Responsibilities

Study Execution Leadership

  • Drive high-performance study execution with a focus on skill mastery, efficiency, and operational excellence.
  • Position direct reports for success through mentorship, mentoring, and strategic development.

People Management & Growth

  • Conduct performance management, including stakeholder feedback, goal setting, and progressive goal monitoring.
  • Empower SMAs to grow into leadership roles via:
    • Individualised development plans for AbbVie employees.
    • Stretch opportunities shaping career trajectories.
  • Foster a mentoring culture within the SMAO and across clinical leadership.

Resource & Operational Agility

  • Manage flexible and strategic resource allocation to support:
    • Business continuity and shifting constraints.
    • Vacancy management, demand forecasting, and regional expansion.
    • Cross-functional partnerships to meet aggressive execution goals.

Policy, Compliance & Training

  • Ensure awareness and adherence to:
    • Corporate and divisional policies aligned with global regulations (ICH & GCP).
    • Timely training completion and reinforcement of compliance standards.
  • Contribute to developing training curricula and Quality Systems Documents (QSDs).

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Build collaborative relationships across study teams, SMAO leadership (peer group), and cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Drive efficiency improvements and process optimisation through participation in workstreams (SMAO, CSL, CDO).

Key Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree required, with preference for healthcare or scientific disciplines.

Experience

  • Extensive experience in clinical research, including:
    • Global study operations spanning multiple therapeutic areas/geographies.
    • People management in a high-paced, matrix-driven environment.
    • Direct reporting influence, coaching, and mentoring (formal/peer-managed).
