Description

You will provide leadership of AFME’s EU and UK Policy development for all our Capital Markets policy areas in:

  • Fixed Income (Securitisation, High Yield and Fixed Income Trading)
  • Equities (Primary (ECM) and Secondary, Post-Trade)
  • MiFID-related topics (including Wholesale Investor Protection and Research)
  • Commodities

Using your expertise and professional knowledge, you will proactively shape the work activity, promoting a culture of continuous improvement and innovation across the Capital Markets Division. You will be able to provide leading-edge business insights to provide highly impactful advice to our Members by:

  • Monitoring, analysing, and shaping new developments in public policy, regulations, supervision, and market structure
  • Building consensus within the industry and acting as a bridge between members and a wide range of stakeholders, and other market participants such as issuers, investors, and other relevant trade groups
  • Developing policy positions and best practices
  • Promoting the growth, development, and greater efficiency of the EU and UK cash primary and secondary markets across nearly all major asset classes

You will be required to work on cross-asset class issues with other divisions, which notably include Sustainable Finance, Technology & Operations, (including the impact of securities tokenisation and AI), Capital & Risk Management, and Compliance.

Key Responsibilities

You will be ultimately accountable for a team of around 20, with six direct reports, taking accountability for the decisions and actions of the team, identifying the key questions to ask in complex situations, providing direction. You will be able to resolve conflicts, bringing all parties together to affect a mutually acceptable solution, shaping work activity and practice.

You will be able to skilfully navigate and build active strategic partnerships with other internal functions, working across a matrix structure, and acting in line with organisational needs, rise above the influence of any one stakeholder or group and, specifically with:

  • AFME Communications and Advocacy teams, maintain and raise AFME’s visibility in the press official sector, and with other relevant trade associations
  • AFME Events team, take responsibility for the policy content of capital markets events, sourcing keynote speakers and panel participants, and work to agreed commercial objectives for each event
  • AFME Membership team, support activities to increase membership and identify new bank and non-bank members
  • GFMA colleagues, support their work on global capital markets issues

You will be a member of AFME’s Senior Management Team (SMT), which provides managerial leadership to AFME employees, contributing to strategy development, ensuring it is implemented effectively, and, leading by example, encourage employees to take the vision and mission of the company forward.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

Essential:

  • Deep understanding of EU, UK, and international rule-making and standard-setting processes
  • Senior capital markets business-side [and/or regulatory] experience in a bank or investor, in one or more relevant asset classes, in origination/arranging, corporate finance, trading, sales, operations, research, or management
  • Possession of a high level of financial literacy including a very good understanding of banking and capital markets and a well-tuned commercial awareness
  • Able to work through complex technical matters, build consensus across a range of member firms with diverse interests, and communicate with both specialists and non-specialists in a clear, concise, and straightforward manner
  • Can see “the big picture” while simultaneously retaining focus on detailed regulatory requirements and an ability to synthesise large volumes of information and identify key issues
  • Extensive experience in engaging with a broad range of senior interlocutors particularly in the EU but also in the UK and internationally
  • Evidence of stakeholder management skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and confidence to liaise and build relationships with a variety of stakeholders where not already held
  • Professional maturity; credibility and impact
  • Track record in the successful management and mentoring of high-performing multi-cultural teams
  • Willing to take on topics and tasks beyond current expertise and develop new knowledge quickly; able to prioritise and multi-task efficiently
  • Strong public speaking and writing skills

Desirable:

  • Experience working in or with trade associations in the EU and/or UK
  • Experience working with governments and/or regulatory bodies
  • Educated to degree+ level
  • Securities markets professional development qualifications
  • Fluency in a European language other than English
