Managing Legal Counsel

Join us as a Managing Legal Counsel, a rare opportunity to step into a senior legal role within one of the UK’s leading Private Banking and Wealth Management businesses.

You’ll support Coutts & Co at a pivotal point in its growth journey, shaping legal decisions during a period of strategic expansion and integration. This is a high-profile role, requiring close partnership with senior leaders and the ability to influence decisions in a complex, regulated environment.

Contract length: 12 months (fixed-term)


About the Role

As our Managing Legal Counsel, you’ll:

  • Lead high-quality, varied legal work in a collaborative and commercially focused team.
  • Provide practical, clear legal advice that supports strategic decision-making and delivers strong commercial outcomes.
  • Work closely with business stakeholders to ensure clear, efficient, and effective communication at all levels.
  • Play a key role during a period of growth within the Private Banking and Wealth Management business.

Key Responsibilities

Your work will focus on:

  • Providing proactive, commercially focused legal advice on:
    • Wealth management
    • Retail investment products and services
  • Supporting strategic growth and integration activities, including advising on:
    • Key initiatives
    • Effective legal risk management
  • Partnering with senior stakeholders (Risk, Compliance, Governance) to:
    • Support informed decision-making
  • Influencing decisions in a regulated environment while:
    • Balancing commercial objectives with legal and regulatory requirements
  • Driving improvements in operating practices and processes, including:
    • Identifying efficiency opportunities
    • Reducing process complexity

Requirements & Skills

We’re seeking a financial services professional with:

  • Deep expertise in wealth management and retail investments, including legal and regulatory knowledge.
  • Experience operating in a dynamic regulatory environment, proven ability to:
    • Build trusted relationships quickly with senior executives, colleagues, and external stakeholders.

Key Qualifications & Experience

  • A strong understanding of the:
    • Wealth and asset management sector
    • Regulatory environment governing these industries
  • Proven leadership capability, including:
    • Guiding teams
    • Influencing strategy and high-quality delivery across complex work areas
  • Ability to identify and assess strategic, legal, and reputational risks, providing clear guidance on management or resolution.
