Managing Quantity Surveyor – Rail Business, Southern Region
[About the Role]
We are recruiting for a Managing Quantity Surveyor to join Octavius, a leading civil engineering organisation delivering safe, sustainable, and efficient transport infrastructure across the UK.
This role sits within our Rail business, supporting a long-term Network Rail framework in the Southern region. You will deliver reactive and planned maintenance to critical rail assets across Kent, Sussex, and Wessex, helping to keep the railway safe, reliable, and efficient for passengers and freight.
What You’ll Work On
- A long-term Route Reactive Maintenance framework (currently in Year 3 of a 10-year programme), providing visibility and continuity of work.
- Operating in a high-volume, fast-paced environment, overseeing £15m annual portfolio and managing ~14,000 faults yearly.
- Key Focus Areas:
- Driving profitability and cash recovery
- Leading robust commercial performance and reporting
- Ensuring effective NEC contract administration and change control
- Identifying commercial risks and opportunities
- Improving processes within a highly transactional delivery model
- Developing and strengthening the commercial function, embedding best practice and driving continuous improvement.

[Who You’ll Work With]
You’ll collaborate with:
- Operational teams and project delivery leads
- Clients and stakeholders across the network
- Your own team of ~4–5 direct reports, alongside wider commercial support
Relationships, visibility, and influence across both site and office environments are critical in this role.

[Essential]
- Proven experience as a Managing/Senior Quantity Surveyor preferably within a fast-paced or framework environment
- Leadership ability to develop, mentor, and performance-manage teams
- Hands-on experience with Schedules of Rates and transactional workstreams
- Strong understanding of NEC contracts and commercial governance
- Detail-oriented yet strategic mindset – ensuring predictable project performance
