Job Title

Primarily responsible for supporting setters in preparation and hanging of mould tools.

What you'll do at work

  • Retrieve prepared moulds and installs into injection moulding press
  • Secure mould in machine and associated ancillary equipment
  • Loads material into the machine hopper
  • Remove moulds from the press and stage for disassembly
  • Purge barrel of leftover materials at the conclusion of an order
  • Adhere to all quality and safety standards within the department
  • Maintain clean and organised work area with emphasis on safety, quality, efficiency, and utilisation
  • Set machines to run products & troubleshoot problems
  • Continually seek to improve work processes and individual performance
  • Follow Health and Safety regulations at Broanmain
  • To be aware of tool change times and provide solutions for improvement of this.
  • Complete and update necessary paperwork
  • Perform maintenance work such as cleaning and oiling machines.
  • Remove parts such as tools from machines after production runs are finished and ensure total clean down of run is completed.
  • Inventory and record quantities of materials and finished products, requisitioning additional supplies as necessary.
  • Repair or replace damaged moulds, pipes, belts, chains, or other equipment, using hand tools, hand-powered presses, or jib cranes.
  • Work and support the tool room, learning machining operations
  • Work and support the finishing department
  • Obtain and move specified tools to work stations using appropriate equipment
  • Connect water hoses to cooling systems of dies, using hand tools
  • Participate in continuous improvement practices
  • Ensure good housekeeping is kept at all times
  • Work pro-actively with all employees across various departments, undertaking a flexible approach to ensure the business needs are met
  • Be responsible for proactively undertaking quality checking and caring about yours and colleagues work in producing good products and services for Broanmain Plastics customers
  • Ad-hoc tasks for Line Manager and assist all Directors with all reasonable requests
  • Take reasonable care for the Health and Safety of yourself and any other persons who may be affected by your acts and to co-operate with the Company in order that the employer’s duty may be fulfilled
  • Carry out engineering operations using range of equipment throughout the business (eg Mill, Lathe, Ultrasonic Welder)
  • Provide support to the Engineering Department relating to equipment maintenance and servicing

What you'll learn

Course contents

  • Translate conceptual ideas or technical requirements into developmental outcomes, operational designs, or specifications for manufacturing projects or programmes of work.
  • Select, use and apply approved problem-solving methods to solve problems and determine solutions or actions.
  • Collate, store, use and present data and supporting documentation.
  • Interpret and produce technical documentation such as schematic and circuit diagrams, engineering drawings or 3D CAD models, simulation models, engineering reports, test reports, fault reports or data analytics.
  • Observe, record and draw accurate and auditable conclusions from data evidence.
  • Manage assigned projects or programmes of work, taking into account factors such as planning, safety, quality, cost, performance and sustainability.
  • Apply processes for project or programme management such as escalation, audit or risk management and risk mitigation.
  • Comply with statutory and organisational safety and security standards and requirements, supporting safety risk assessments and mitigate any risks identified within the design, manufacture, development or test activity.
  • Identify and use manufacturing processes, resources and technologies to turn the materials, components or other commodities into a finished product or system.
  • Apply quality management and assurance processes to identify and rectify faults, inaccuracies, discrepancies or unexpected results during the manufacturing engineering process.
  • Carry out pre operations checks of engineering manufacturing systems and equipment before use.
  • Manage continuous improvement activities using techniques such as Six Sigma, 5s, Kaizen, Lean, Kanban, Statistical Process Control or Value Stream Mapping.
  • Create, maintain and review project documentation. Record and action any non-conformities.
  • Communicate with others verbally for example, colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Communicate in writing for example technical reports, documents and presentations.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and stakeholders. Manage differing and competing interests with stakeholders.
  • Identify and complete opportunities for personal and professional development including keeping up to date with current and emerging technology.
  • Apply and promote policies and practices to support equity, diversity and inclusion.
  • Consider management of change (MOC) requirements when undertaking manufacturing projects or programmes of work.
  • Comply with environmental and sustainability legislation, regulations and standards associated with the manufacturing engineering environment. Uses resources efficiently, for example waste minimisation.
  • Ensure equipment is managed and maintained.
  • Optimise processes and procedures, such as relating to safety, efficiency, performance, productivity and sustainability.
  • Ensure that all systems or equipment has been correctly configured, checked and tested for safe operation, efficiency and reliability.

Training schedule

Training will take place at University of Chichester (Chichester & Bognor)
Training will be one and a half days a week, then reducing to one day a week at University in the apprentice's 2nd, 3rd and 4th year

Essential qualifications

  • GCSE in:
    • English (grade Grade C/4 or above)
    • Maths (grade Grade C/4 or above)
  • A Level in:
    • Related Subject (grade Grade C or above)
  • Level 3 in:
    • Related Subject (grade PASS/C or above)
