Job Title: Manufacturing Engineering Manager

Location: Peterborough, United Kingdom

Salary: £57,737 - £65,000 depending on experience

About IPSD

Caterpillar’s Industrial Power Systems Division (IPSD) designs, tests and manufactures 0.5 to 18L Cat® and Perkins engines that power over 5000 applications including Marine, Petroleum, Industrial Applications, Electric Generators, and Locomotives. The Opportunity

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Global Technical Services Manufacturing Engineering ATF (Assembly, Test & Finish) team. As Manufacturing Engineering Manager, you will lead manufacturing engineering activities across assigned value streams, driving continuous improvement in People, Quality, Velocity and Cost (PQVC) performance. You will be responsible for delivering process solutions that support New Product Introduction (NPI) and New Source Introduction (NSI) programmes, improving operational performance, and ensuring compliance with global quality standards.

Working closely with global manufacturing sites, you will help align production processes, share best practices, and implement improvement opportunities across the network. You will also lead a team of 4–8 Manufacturing Engineers and 2–4 Process Technicians, providing technical leadership, coaching, and development to build a high-performing team.

The successful candidate will be a proactive and self-motivated leader with a passion for operational excellence, continuous improvement, and developing people within a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

What You Will Do

  • Lead, coach and develop a team of Manufacturing Engineers and Process Technicians, fostering a culture of accountability, engagement and continuous improvement.
  • Drive improvements in safety, quality, delivery, velocity, operational efficiency and cost performance across assigned value streams.
  • Manage manufacturing engineering resources, budgets, capital expenditure forecasts and project priorities to support business objectives.
  • Deliver manufacturing process improvements, technical problem-solving and new process implementation to optimise productivity, quality and cost.
  • Support New Product Introduction (NPI) and New Source Introduction (NSI) programmes, ensuring successful launch and achievement of customer, quality and cost targets.
  • Lead cross-functional collaboration to meet customer requirements and production commitments while maximising Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE).
  • Ensure compliance with global quality standards, regulatory requirements, and site policies relating to safety, ergonomics and operational excellence.
  • Drive Lean Manufacturing principles and continuous improvement initiatives to enhance process capability and operational performance.
  • Oversee facility layout, equipment utilisation and manufacturing readiness to support changing production requirements.
  • Develop and execute annual business and cost centre plans, monitoring performance against key objectives and KPIs.
  • Build strong internal and external stakeholder networks to align manufacturing strategies, share best practices and support business goals.

What You Will Have

Manufacturing Processes

  • Knowledge of existing product manufacturing methods, technologies and processes; ability to execute, plan, manage and monitor the entire manufacturing process.
  • Experience leading manufacturing engineering teams and/or projects to successfully implement process improvements, resolve complex technical challenges, and support operational excellence goals.
  • Demonstrated capability to provide guidance, gain buy-in and drive outcomes through indirect leadership in a matrix environment.

Lean Manufacturing

  • Knowledge of the philosophy, principles and implementation approaches of lean manufacturing; ability to integrate and implement lean manufacturing philosophy into existing production and management processes.
  • Evidence of problem-solving skills and experience of managing in a pressurised environment.

Manufacturing Equipment

  • Knowledge of the electrical, mechanical and logistics equipment used in manufacturing; ability to safely operate, maintain, update and store them.

Decision Making and Critical Thinking

  • Knowledge of the decision-making process and associated tools and techniques; ability to accurately analyze situations and reach productive decisions based on informed judgment.

Capacity Planning & Management - EE

  • Knowledge of tools, approaches and practices for determining production demand and ability to manage resources needed to provide satisfactory levels of service.

Performance Management

  • Knowledge of successful performance management techniques; ability to apply organization's performance management system, practices, and tools to developing and improving individual, team, and organizational performance.

Problem Solving

  • Knowledge of approaches, tools, techniques for recognizing, anticipating, and resolving organizational, operational or process problems; ability to apply knowledge of problem solving appropriately to diverse situations.

Top Candidates may demonstrate some of the following skills:

  • Strong understanding of Industry 4.0 and Smart Factory technologies, including digital manufacturing, connected systems, data analytics and industrial automation.
  • Proven experience leading and executing manufacturing automation projects, from business case development through to implementation and validation.
  • Leadership experience – demonstrating the ability to lead, motivate and inspire.
  • Demonstrated knowledge/understanding engine manufacturing processes.
