Work will be carried out across GMP manufacturing areas, ISO 5 & ISO 7 cleanrooms, laboratories and warehouse environments. Appropriate PPE, including cleanroom gowning and respirator hood PPE, is required when working within controlled manufacturing areas.

Position Summary

As a Manufacturing Equipment & Reliability Engineer, you'll take ownership of maintaining and improving a wide range of automated manufacturing and laboratory equipment used to produce life science products.

This is a hands-on engineering role focused on equipment reliability, preventative maintenance, fault finding and continuous improvement. Working closely with Production, Quality and Tech Ops teams, you'll help maximise equipment availability, minimise downtime and implement permanent corrective actions to improve manufacturing performance.

You'll have the opportunity to work on advanced production automation, robotics, packaging systems and laboratory instrumentation while developing your technical expertise within a highly regulated manufacturing environment.

What You'll Be Doing

Equipment Reliability & Maintenance

  • Perform planned preventative maintenance (PPM), servicing and calibration activities across manufacturing and laboratory equipment.
  • Diagnose and repair electrical, mechanical, pneumatic and automation faults.
  • Respond to equipment breakdowns, restoring production safely and efficiently.
  • Investigate recurring equipment failures and implement robust corrective actions to prevent reoccurrence.
  • Drive improvements in equipment reliability, availability and overall asset performance.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records within the Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS).

Production Equipment Support

Maintain and improve a variety of manufacturing equipment including:

  • Automated liquid filling systems
  • Packaging equipment including cartoners, shrink wrappers and sealers
  • Conveyor systems
  • Robotic and automated handling equipment
  • Thermal Control Units (TCUs) and chillers
  • Laboratory automation platforms
  • PCR, qPCR and DNA/RNA instrumentation
  • General manufacturing and workshop equipment

Continuous Improvement

  • Identify opportunities to improve equipment reliability, maintainability and performance.
  • Use structured root cause analysis techniques to eliminate repeat failures.
  • Support equipment upgrades, modifications and installation of new assets.
  • Participate in engineering projects that improve safety, quality and manufacturing efficiency.
  • Support the implementation of predictive and preventative maintenance strategies.

Engineering & Compliance

  • Work safely within GMP and cleanroom environments.
  • Prepare and follow Risk Assessments and Permit to Work systems.
  • Supervise contractors and Field Service Engineers when required.
  • Ensure all work complies with Engineering, Quality and EHS standards.
  • Complete engineering documentation in accordance with Good Documentation Practice (GDP).

You'll ideally have experience in:

  • Electrical and mechanical fault finding
  • Preventative and corrective maintenance
  • Automated manufacturing equipment
  • PLC fault finding (desirable)
  • Pneumatic systems
  • Robotics or automation equipment
  • Root Cause Analysis
  • CMMS maintenance systems
  • Equipment reliability and asset care

Experience within pharmaceutical, medical device, life sciences or other regulated manufacturing industries would be advantageous but is not essential.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Time-served Engineering Apprenticeship
  • HNC/HND (or equivalent) in Mechanical, Electrical or Manufacturing Engineering
  • Multi-skilled engineering experience (Electrical/Mechanical)
  • Experience maintaining production or manufacturing equipment
  • Strong fault-finding and problem-solving skills

Desirable

  • PLC troubleshooting
  • Robotics and automation experience
  • Experience working within GMP or ISO 13485 environments
  • Reliability engineering or TPM experience
  • Lean manufacturing awareness
