About the Role We currently have a fantastic opportunity for a Design Engineer – Construction & Outfit to join the team here at Lateral. The Outfit Design Engineer is responsible for providing a skilled contribution to the design and integration of yacht equipment into complex, high-quality superyacht projects. Working alongside a strong team of structural engineers and naval architects, your day-to-day work will be on developing yacht design in a 2D & 3D CAD environment and draughting detailed drawings. Working in a whole-ship design environment, from initial concepts and through the development and approval process, you will work on some of the most eye-catching superyacht projects in the world.

The role is based in our Southampton office, and we offer flexibility and hybrid working arrangements around the core hours and in-office days required for our team.
Key Responsibilities of the Role: Working with naval architects, marine engineers, shipyards, suppliers and clients to conceptualise and develop ship equipment arrangements. Utilising practical knowledge and experience of ship design and operation to design safe and effective solutions to complex design problems. Actively manage the quality of work produced, the appropriate level of detail, the adequate checking prior to release, and the completion of assigned tasks in a timely and transparent manner. Ensuring that the relevant Classification Society and/or National Authority standards are met. Ensuring all design deliverables are completed accurately and to high level of quality. Contributing to and supporting the entire project and product design cycle, from concept to construction and installation.
Key Requirements for the Role: Minimum 3 years relevant experience in the marine industry. The ability to process technical problems and effectively seek out the correct technical solution using sound engineering judgement. The ability to produce clear and well-presented drawings and plans to a suitable quality and standard. Excellent communication skills to liaise with colleagues and stakeholders during appropriate design phases to ensure coordination and functionality of design. Self-motivation and time management to meet agreed targets and deliverables deadlines.

Desirable skills: 2D CAD (AutoCAD) to produce design information (Advanced skill level). 3D CAD (Rhino) and other specialist software as required to produce and to review design information. MS Office to develop reports, spreadsheets and presentation information. Knowledge and understanding of statutory regulations and Classification and Flag rule sets. Knowledge and understanding of ship systems design, preferably with direct shipyard or on-board experience. Knowledge and understanding of ship structural design and its impact upon integration.
