Marine Engineer – Southampton
Not everyone is cut out for tug work—that’s exactly the point.
Svitzer is looking for a hands-on Marine Engineer to maintain and operate high-power tug machinery in a fast-paced port environment.
This role demands responsibility, real engineering challenges, and is a genuine route to becoming a Chief Engineer.
This Is What The Job Looks Like
- Maintenance and operation of high-performance tug machinery in a live port environment
- Diagnosing and fixing faults under pressure
- Ownership of engine room safety, condition, and readiness
- Supporting the Master and crew to ensure continuous vessel operability
- Working in a small, trust-based crew, where competence is non-negotiable
If you're looking for a quiet engine room, this isn’t it. If you want to become a better engineer, it probably is.
Why Svitzer?
We believe in proper tug engineering:
✔ Work-life balance – 1 week on, 1 week off, with proper switch-off time ✔ Well-maintained fleet – no shortcuts, no neglected machinery ✔ Clear progression path – many senior Chief Engineers (SV) have started here ✔ Development support – mentoring, training, and funded certification “We don’t promise an easy job. We promise one that makes you better at what you do.”

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
