Location: England – Offshore Operations
Salary: £25,729.45 plus excellent benefits
Qualification: Maritime mechanical and electrical mechanic (level 2)
About the Role
Are you looking to start a rewarding maritime career while supporting critical military training exercises? This offshore apprenticeship offers a unique opportunity to earn, train, and build a future at sea while working in a disciplined team environment and contributing to a safer, more secure, and sustainable future.
As an apprentice, you will join the Offshore Operations team, gaining hands-on experience onboard Serco-operated vessels. This role provides real-world training while you work towards a recognised Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) qualification, paving the way for a long-term career as an Engine Room Rating.
Programme Details:
- Training Provider: Fleetwood Nautical Campus (Blackpool & The Fylde College)
- Duration: 24 months (full-time)
- Start Date: January 2027
- Schedule: 48 hours per week, including sea phases and college-based learning
What You’ll Do
As a Maritime Mechanical and Electrical Mechanic Apprentice, you will:
- Collaborate as part of the engineering department on board ships, supporting:
- Safe engine room watchkeeping duties
- Maintenance and servicing of mechanical and electrical systems
- Fault identification, reporting, and routine servicing
- Onboard safety, efficiency, and operational standards
The apprenticeship blends hands-on sea service with academic learning, offering:

Key Responsibilities:
- Assist with the safe monitoring of engine room machinery and systems
- Carry out routine maintenance tasks, following procedures and standards
- Conduct basic fault diagnosis and report escalations with support
- Support in bunkering, lubrication, and fluid management
- Learn and assist in enginedroom watchkeeping duties ashore and afloat
- Comply with all health, safety, and environmental protocols
- Complete college assessments and onboard training recordbook requirements
- Successfully complete the End Point Assessment (EPA) for the Engineering Technician Programme

- Adherence to Serco Values and associated behaviours
- Full funding of travel, accommodation, and training
- Comprehensive mentorship during the whole process
- Exposure to global operations, including international assignments
Expectations

You will be entrusted to:
✔ Demonstrate competence as an engine room team member in supervised tasks, using clear instructions and safety procedures
✔ Participate in watchkeeping duties, supporting the seamless operation of vessel systems
✔ Follow strict procedures during maintenance, fueling, and fluid servicing
✔ Adhere to firefighting and sea survival training requirements
✔ Complete reported sea time milestones under guidance
✔ Uphold UK Merchant Navy Code of Conduct and Serco core values at all times
✔ Complete all assigned educational and practical assessments
Does This Sound Like You?
To thrive in this role, you should have:
Essential Requirements
- At least 18 years of age
- British National with a valid UK passport and ability to obtain a Security Clearance
- Four GCSEs (or recognised equivalents; Maths and English minimum Grade C/4)
- Ability to secure an ENG1 medical certificate (required for UK maritime employment)
- Teammate orientation and reliability in a strongly safety-focused environment
- A willingness to learn, adapt, and contribute in all weather and international settings
