About the Apprenticeship

  • Qualification: Maritime mechanical and electrical mechanic (Level 2)
  • Training Proiders: Fleetwood Nautical Campus (Blackpool & The Fylde College)
  • Duration: 24 months (Full-Time/48 hours including sea phases and college-based learning)
  • Start Date: January 2027

Serco is seeking enthusiastic Apprentices to join their Offshore Operations team. Working at the frontline of defence support, our offshore vessels operate as global platforms, delivering essential services both in the UK and abroad. Offers a unique opportunity for those who love:

As an Maritime Mechanical and Electrical Mechanic Apprentice, you will earn from day one while gaining real-world experience toward a Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) certification as an Engine Room Rating.

Key Responsibilities

You will be responsible for the following:

  • Developing and demonstrating competence in engine room teamwork under supervision
  • Assisting with the safe operation and monitoring of engine room machinery and systems
  • Supporting routine maintenance tasks on mechanical and electrical equipment
  • Carrying out basic fault identification and reporting
  • Maintaining high standards of cleanliness within engine rooms and associated spaces
  • Participating in bunkering, lubrication, and fluid management activities
  • Supporting watchkeeping duties in the engine room, both in port and at sea
  • Complying with health, safety, and environmental procedures
  • Performing additional duties to support vessel operations
  • Participating in mandatory training (fire-fighting, sea survival, and emergency response)
  • Achieving required sea service within the set timeframe
  • Demonstrating Serco values (Trust, Care, Innovation and Pride)

What the Programme Includes

  • Combination of practical, hands-on experience at sea with structured learning at Fleetwood Nautical Campus
  • Support from experienced crew through mentorship and guidance
  • Fully funded training, including travel
  • Assessment elements and an End Point Assessment (EPA) conducted by the Industry and Maritime Training Board (IAMI)
  • Award of MCA Engine Room Rating Certificate on successful completion

Requirements

  • Be a minimum of 18 years of age
  • Flexibility to alternate between college and sea phases, including extended periods away from home
  • Be a British national holding a valid UK Passport and be cleared for security access
  • Hold 4 GCSEs (or equivalent) including Maths and English at grade C/4 or above
  • Ability to obtain an ENG1 unrestricted medical certificate
  • Strong ability to work as part of a disciplined, safety-focused team
  • Proactive attitude with a clear willingness to learn, grow, and adapt
