Material Control Crew Member

Material Controller

Location: Woodford Halse Job Type: 18 Month – Fixed Term Contract Department: Material Operations Reports to: Material Planning Manager

Hours of Work: Your normal hours of work are from 07:30 to 16:15 from Monday to Thursday, and 07:00 to 15:30 on Friday, with a 30-minute unpaid lunch break each day. You may be expected to work additional hours as required by the business. You will also be entitled to one working-from-home day per week.

Job Summary

As the Material Controller, you will be responsible for ensuring the timely availability of materials and components to support our production and build schedules, embodying our philosophy that "Everything Is Important."

The role involves planning and coordinating material requirements, managing inventory levels, and maintaining supply chain continuity to meet operational demands. You will:

  • Interpret production schedules to create material demand plans
  • Monitor stock levels against agreed targets
  • Proactively manage supply risks to minimize production disruptions
  • Collaborate with suppliers and cross-functional teams to ensure material availability
  • Resolve material shortages, support supplier performance, and drive continuous improvement

Key Responsibilities

  • Schedule and control the supply of materials and components to meet build plan requirements
  • Monitor and report material shortages, ensuring risks to production are identified and communicated promptly
  • Liaise daily with the Build team to resolve vehicle-specific material shortages
  • Work closely with Material Controllers to manage part availability and coordinate actions to prevent build delays
  • Attend build and production meetings, providing updates on material status, shortages, and recovery plans
  • Collaborate with the MRP Data Analyst to resolve demand planning issues and improve accuracy
  • Maintain and communicate car-by-car material status updates during SOS (Situations On Status) meetings
  • Manage supplier communications to expedite deliveries, resolve issues, and ensure on-time material delivery
  • Monitor stock levels against production demand and planning assumptions
  • Interpret build schedules and MRP requirements to create accurate material demand plans
  • Identify and mitigate supply chain risks that may impact schedules
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives, including optimising material planning and supply processes
  • Develop strong relationships with internal teams and suppliers to ensure timely material supply
  • Participate in supplier meetings and actions that support production requirements
  • Implement and evaluate material delivery processes from supplier to workshop where required
  • Create and issue material forecasts to suppliers while building strong supplier relationships
  • Support supplier meetings and negotiations to meet demand

Skills, Abilities, and Attributes

  • A good understanding of supply chain management or expertise in a specialist area
  • Knowledge of manufacturing and automotive processes (advantageous)
  • Experience using MRP (Material Requirements Planning) systems or similar
  • Proven material planning experience ensuring smooth material supply aligned with production requirements and budget
  • Attention to detail is critical
  • Reliable, punctual, and organised
  • Strong analytical, planning, and problem-solving skills
