Job Description: Materials Development Engineer (NDT)
About the Role
We are recruiting a Materials Development Engineer to specialise in developing and deploying Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) inspection techniques as part of our growing team.
Based in Derby, this role offers an exciting opportunity for a Materials Engineer to learn, specialise, and develop NDT inspection techniques. Training will be provided to enhance your skills and provide technical experience across various inspection capabilities.
You will work across the full NDE (Non-Destructive Examination) inspection cycle—from design to deployment—using cutting-edge probe technology and software, including practical trials and modelling as applicable.
Key Responsibilities
Technical & Project Work
- Design, develop, and deploy advanced automated ultrasonic (UT) and eddy current (ET) inspection techniques, including:
- State-of-the-art Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT)
- Eddy Current Array (ECA) for naval nuclear reactor plant components
- Operate as part of a technically expert team, focusing on meeting customer satisfaction and implementing new NDE methodologies
- Work with bespoke remotely operated equipment for remote inspections
- Utilise practical trials and software modelling where necessary

Deployment & Operations
- Primary work sites include:
- Barrow-in-Furness shipyard
- Naval bases (Devonport & Faslane)
- Vulcan Naval Test Reactor Establishment
- Field deployments are typically up to 2 weeks and will require 25% time away from home yearly
- Shift & Condition Requirements:
- Deskless work supported by fixed/rotating shifts (typically 12-hour shifts, 24/7/365 coverage), including weekends and statutory holidays
- Must be a valid driver for compliance with H&S policy. Will expose you to physically challenging environments
Requirements
Qualifications & Experience
- Degree in a STEM discipline: Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics
- Demonstrated expertise in:
- Developing materials testing tools & techniques
- Writing technical reports (clear, concise, and accurate)
- Operating in highly technical, multidisciplinary teams and meeting tight deadlines
Security & Nationality
- Eligibility to hold a UK Security Check clearance: Rolls-Royce will assist with applications if necessary.
- Applicants must be UK nationals (or dual nationals in select MoD-approved cases)
