Your New Role

We’re seeking an experienced Materials Manager to lead materials, stores, and logistics operations within a Train Maintenance Centre (TMC). This hands-on, onsite leadership position demands ownership of:

  • Stock integrity
  • Materials availability
  • Supply chain performance

Your responsibilities will ensure fleets are maintained safely, efficiently, and to the highest standards, while driving continual improvement in our supply chain.


Key Responsibilities

  • Operational Leadership

    • Lead and manage materials, stores, and inventory operations to support maintenance workflows and fleet availability.
    • Oversee robust stock control, governance, and inventory accuracy for all materials and tooling.
  • Safety & Compliance

    • Foster a strong health & safety culture and ensure adherence to all regulatory and company standards.
  • Team & Performance Management

    • Provide direction to the materials team, focusing on performance uplifts, engagement, and talent development.

  • Supplier & External Relationships

    • Manage supplier and third-party logistics (3PL) partnerships to maintain service levels, cost efficiency, and value alignment.
  • Technical & Maintenance Focus

    • Monitor tooling, calibration (IMTE), and critical asset readiness to safeguard operational reliability.
  • Process Improvement & Risk Management

    • Conduct audits, manage risks, and ensure compliance across materials and inventory processes.
  • Collaborative Optimization

    • Partner with supply chain, procurement, and systems teams to streamline processes and enhance performance.

About You

We’re looking for a passionate leader driven by operational excellence and continuous innovation.

Must-Have Experience & Qualifications

  • Proven track record in managing materials, stores, or warehouse operations in a complex, high-demand environment.
  • Strong leadership experience, with the ability to inspire, develop, and coach high-performing teams.
  • Expertise in inventory control, stock governance, and operational efficiency.
  • Experience in budget management and cost-saving initiatives.
  • Exceptional communication skills, with proven ability to engage stakeholders across all levels.
  • Valid UK Driving Licence (no more than 6 points).

Desirable (Not Essential)

  • Industry experience in rail or safety-critical environments.
  • Familiarity with SAP or similar stock/asset management systems.
  • Qualifications in supply chain, logistics, or stores management.
