About the Role
As a Maths and English Tutor at Abbey Wood, you’ll be a coaching presence, not just an instructor, shaping every child’s learning journey through:
Responsibilities
- Crafting Engaging Lessons Using Compass
- Apply Concepts from your understanding of Maths and English to facilitate dynamic sessions.
- Utilise questioning, scaffolding, and stretch activities aligned with each child’s needs.
- Ensure lessons meet effective learning objectives, progressing in real time based on Compass data.
- Building Trust & Relationships
- Develop clear, consistent rapport with 16+ children across ages 4-16.
- Adapt your teaching style to build confidence and motivate learners despite any challenges.
- Address safeguarding needs with professionalism, ensuring safety and wellbeing always remain central.

- Supporting Academic Success
- Guide** children through core subjects, entrance exams (such as the 11+), and GCSE preparation.
- Celebrate progress—whether it’s mastering a maths concept or confidently answering English questions.
Requirements
To excel in this role, you’ll need to:
- Have worked or volunteer in a education or mentoring capacity (especially in Maths or English preferred), or, at minimum, demonstrate aptitude in these subjects.
- Be comfortable leading small-group teaching (max. 16 children) and using techniques for positive behaviour management.
- Achieve a Grade 6 or above in Maths and English GCSE or qualify with an equivalent qualification (e.g., Functional Skills Level 2).
- Note:** Predicted grades accepted if completing GCSEs within 3 months.*
- Have a natural ability to engage and inspire children to develop resilience and independence.
- Be proactively committed to safeguarding (no relevant criminal convictions). Full DBS Enhanced Disclosure required.

The Details
- Location
- On-site basis at our centre located in Abbey Wood.
- Contract & Working Hours
- Permanent, part-time role—#Minimum week demand initially is 6 hours per week, spread over 2+ weekdays.
- Available start times:
- Tuesday 3:30-4pm
- Wednesday 3:30-4pm
- Thursday 3:30-4pm
- Friday 3:30-4pm
- Morning/afternoon Saturday
- Available start times:
- This is not a seasonal role—you’d be joining us year-round across the academic term.
- Pay Structure
Your pay is based on hourly rate + experience:

- +£0.50-an-hour boost if tutoring inside the M25.
- Annuall review gives you the chance to increase pay depending on hours tutored.
