Mechanical Design Engineer

Yeovil

Mechanical Design Engineer salary: £22.20 per hour (contract)

Please note: only applicants with the full-time, permanent right to work in the UK will be considered.

Mechanical Design Engineer Overview

Support concept and detailed design work on complex aerospace systems

  • Produce drawing packs, tolerance analysis and supporting engineering documentation
  • Work with 2D/3D CAD, with Siemens NX experience particularly useful
  • Liaise with production engineering and planning to support design for manufacture

Contract opportunity within a highly regulated aerospace engineering environment

This Mechanical Design Engineer role is based in Yeovil and will support complex aerospace engineering projects across advanced mechanical systems. The Mechanical Design Engineer will work as part of a design team, supporting concept development, detailed design, engineering changes, drawings and associated technical documentation. This Mechanical Design Engineer position would suit someone with mechanical design experience, strong CAD capability and an understanding of precision components, manufacturing methods and controlled engineering processes.

Day-to-day responsibilities of a Mechanical Design Engineer

  • Support the development of concept designs and detailed mechanical design packages
  • Produce 2D drawings, 3D models, drawing packs and supporting design documentation
  • Carry out tolerance analysis and ensure drawings are clear, accurate and production-ready
  • Process engineering changes in line with configuration and design control requirements
  • Work to internal design standards, procedures and controlled engineering processes
  • Liaise with production engineering and production planning to support manufacturable design solutions
  • Consider cost, manufacturing method and practicality during the design process
  • Support project milestones while working across multiple engineering workstreams
  • Contribute to improved working practices within the design team
  • Work on precision components and mechanical assemblies used in demanding aerospace applications

What they’re looking for - Mechanical Design Engineer

  • Mechanical design engineering experience, ideally within aerospace, precision engineering or a regulated manufacturing environment
  • Competent using 2D and 3D CAD for component and detail design work
  • Siemens NX experience would be highly useful
  • Ability to produce accurate engineering drawings and supporting documentation
  • Understanding of design for manufacture principles and production constraints
  • Basic knowledge of configuration control
  • Basic understanding of GD&T and tolerance requirements
  • Comfortable working to procedures, standards and project deadlines
  • Degree qualification in Mechanical Engineering or similar is preferred, but relevant experience will also be considered

Desirable - Mechanical Design Engineer

  • Experience designing small, fine-tolerance or precision components
  • Knowledge of machining or other manufacturing techniques
  • Exposure to Lean, Six Sigma or continuous improvement methods
  • Previous aerospace, defence or highly regulated engineering experience
  • Experience supporting engineering change activity
