Mechanic

Mechanic Application Deadline: 17 July 2026 Department: Garage Services Employment Type: Permanent - Full Time Location: Carryduff [IW]

Description The Mechanic will support the effective operation of the Carryduff workshop by carrying out maintenance, repair, and inspection of the Irish Waste, MacNabb Waste and ENVA NI fleet, including HGVs, vans, trailers, and plant equipment.

The role ensures that all vehicles and equipment are maintained to a high standard, are roadworthy, and comply with legal, environmental, and company requirements. The Mechanic will work as part of the workshop team to minimise downtime, support operational continuity, and contribute to a safe and efficient working environment.

Location: Irish Waste, 94-96 Hillsborough Road, Carryduff, BT8 8HT

Key Responsibilities Workshop & Mechanical Operations Carry out servicing, repairs, diagnostics, and maintenance on HGVs, vans, trailers, and plant equipment. Diagnose faults and complete repairs efficiently and to a high standard. Assist in delivering preventative maintenance schedules to reduce breakdowns and downtime. Prepare vehicles for MOT and other compliance inspections. Respond to breakdowns and urgent repair requirements as directed by the Mechanical Supervisor. Ensure all work is completed in line with manufacturer guidelines and company standards. Maintain good housekeeping standards within the workshop. Health, Safety & Compliance Ensure all workshop activities comply with Health & Safety, Environmental, and operational policies. Maintain safe working conditions, including correct use of PPE, safe storage of tools, and hazard control. Complete and maintain accurate service records, inspection sheets, and compliance documentation. Report hazards, defects, near misses, and unsafe conditions promptly. Ensure compliance with all relevant legislation including MOT and workplace safety standards. Assist with audits and inspections where required. Support the Mechanical Supervisor in maintaining workshop cleanliness and organisation. Operational Support & Communication Work collaboratively with the Mechanical Supervisor and wider workshop team. Communicate clearly on job progress, issues, and delays. Support apprentices or junior team members where appropriate. Provide feedback on recurring faults or improvement opportunities. Support the readiness of vehicles for daily operations. Assist with vehicle inspections and defect reporting processes. Ensure repaired vehicles are tested and safe to return to service. This is not an exhaustive list. You may also be required to carry out any other duties as required by the business that you are qualified/trained in that meet the requirements of this role

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise Essential Time-served mechanic or relevant qualification in vehicle maintenance or mechanical engineering. Experience working on HGVs, commercial vehicles, or plant equipment. Ability to diagnose faults and complete repairs independently. Good understanding of Health & Safety in a workshop environment. Ability to complete accurate records and documentation. Good communication and teamwork skills. Reliable, proactive, and strong work ethic. Desirable Experience within waste, transport, or industrial sectors. Knowledge of MOT and compliance requirements. Experience using diagnostic tools and modern vehicle systems. Forklift licence or willingness to obtain one. Willingness to work overtime when required.
