Mechanical Associate
Associate Mechanical Engineer – Building Environments Team (Cambridge)
Buro Happold is recruiting for a versatile Associate Mechanical Engineer to join our vibrant, multi-disciplinary practice in Cambridge.
This role is ideal for a Building Services Engineer seeking an opportunity to lead industry-leading MEP designs within a progressive firm.
About the Role
The successful candidate will:
- Lead MEP (Mechanical, Electrical & Plumbing) projects, both independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team
- Support and assist senior engineers in managing mechanical systems for projects in the Cambridge region and beyond, including:
- Higher Education buildings
- Research facilities
- Mixed-use developments
- Heritage refurbishments
- Collaborate on sustainable, technically innovative projects with diverse teams, including sustainability, building physics, facades, lighting, and fire engineering
- Play an active role in technical delivery, project management, mentorship, business development, and client engagement

Client & Stakeholder Relationships
- Communicate directly with clients, contractors, architects, and developers
- Build and manage relationships to secure and expand business opportunities

Commercial & Administrative Duties
- Prepare technical and financial proposals for new projects
- Manage engineering and technical teams, allocating workloads effectively
- Prepare technical specifications and monitor job financials, including resourcing and expenditure
Skills & Experience
Required qualifications and experience:
- Relevant degree: Bachelor’s (BEng/BSc) or Master’s (MEng/MSc) in Engineering
- Professional registration: Chartered or aspiring chartered status with a body such as CIBSE, IMechE, or equivalent
- Technical expertise:
- Extensive mechanical design experience in an MEP consultancy, with project leadership experience
- Strong awareness of Cambridge market sectors, particularly Higher Education, Science & Technology, Research, refurbs, and decarbonisation
- Collaboration skills:
- Experienced in multi-disciplinary design teams, with strong interpersonal and organisational abilities
- Ability to manage relationships with clients, architects, contractors, and developers
