Job Description
The Building Services Engineer will work closely with the Customer to deliver high‑quality technical support across a range of non‑nuclear and nuclear facilities within the dockyard. This includes refurbishment and renovation activities, new infrastructure developments, and ensuring compliance for heritage and listed structures. The role may involve supporting key delivery projects, providing flexible and professional engineering input to construction‑related activities, and ensuring that all building services modifications, redesigns, and new systems are effectively scoped, developed, and delivered in line with operational needs, safety standards, and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities
Work transparently with various engineering discipline leads / teams to provide clear and concise reports and information regarding progress and management of Risk and Opportunities in relation to the Engineering activities. Bring learnings & operational best practices from other engagements. Undertake technical and feasibility studies and site investigations Develop detailed requirement specifications Support projects as they evolve through the project engineering lifecycles Assess the potential risks of specific projects, as well as undertake risk management in specialist roles Communicate and liaise effectively with a wide set of project stakeholders Support governance meetings. Think both creatively and logically to resolve design and development problems Be adaptable, as project requirements evolve, and ensure relevant parties are notified of changes in the project Compile and peer review project and technical reports.
Work Experience
Qualifications & Experience
Degree (or equivalent qualification) in Building Services, Mechanical, Electrical, Civil or a closely related engineering discipline. Knowledge of building services, layout and industrial requirements. Ability to assess need for modification in line with standards and safety regulation. Develop and refine conceptual designs and detailed engineering drawings for HVAC, electrical, mechanical and plumbing systems. Utilise advanced CAD/BIM tools to create accurate models and blueprints. Draft comprehensive technical specifications and performance criteria for building services systems. Evaluate and select equipment based on rigorous design performance and safety requirements. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (civil, structural, process engineers) to ensure seamless system integration. Participate in design review sessions to coordinate interfaces between building services and facility infrastructure. Consider design methodologies to streamline commissioning and reduce lifecycle costs. Conduct risk assessments and hazard analyses as part of the design process. Develop design mitigation strategies to address potential safety and operational risks. Prepare and maintain design documentation that supports safety cases and regulatory approvals. Manage comprehensive documentation from initial design through commissioning. Prepare detailed engineering reports and update design revisions as needed. Ability to work in ambiguous environments, working with a customer-first approach and providing flexibility to changing requirements.

Desirable Attributes
Understanding of nuclear industry and/or other safety critical environments. Experience in working in a dockyard, marine, Defence or MoD environments particularly with asset lifecycle support. Knowledge of Nuclear licence conditions and Technical Assessment Guilds Liaise with nuclear safety and regulatory experts to verify design compliance with nuclear industry standards and regulations (e.g., ONR, BS/ISO / CIBSE). Lead design meetings and provide technical direction during the engineering phase of projects. Good Communication skills - Makes clear and convincing oral presentations; listens effectively; clarifies information as needed.
