Job Description Mechanical Design / Development Engineer

Location: Wotton under Edge
Salary: Up to £42,000 depending on experience

Renishaw’s Machine Tool Products division is a world leader in the design and development of inspection probe technology and metrology systems for machined parts. We are seeking a Mechanical Design and Development Engineer to join our spindle probe team based at our global HQ in South Gloucestershire.

The Mechanical Design and Development Engineer will be responsible for providing production support and driving design improvements to ensure the ongoing quality, performance, and reliability of existing products. The role will focus on the continuous development and maintenance of a range of kinematic and associated products within a current products environment. The product portfolio includes kinematic probes, product interfaces, and a wide range of probe accessories, all of which are critical components within machine tool probing solutions. These products represent high-value, high-volume revenue streams and are of strategic importance to the Machine Tool Products Division and the wider business, with product lines contributing substantially to MTP’s annual profit.

The role is within current products responsible for supporting production of kinematic spindle probes and their associated interfaces and accessories, with an emphasis to solve engineering problems and deliver improvements in quality, for all applications using CNC machine tools throughout many industries. As a result, the role requires a strong level of technical ownership, commercial awareness, and the ability to manage and prioritise multiple concurrent projects, while maintaining close collaboration with manufacturing, quality, and global stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Supporting production of kinematic spindle probes and their associated interfaces and accessories, with an emphasis to solve engineering problems and deliver improvements in quality, for all applications using CNC machine tools throughout many industries.
  • This will encompass a variety of engineering activities such as:
    • Reactive support for manufacture and assembly of a range of current products, understanding processes and working within them to identify solutions (maintaining quality standards).
    • Performing Engineering drafting duties including drawing creation, update of CAD models, verifying BOM structures and formal design change management using industry standard tools.
    • Occasional liaison with customers and subsidiaries, ensuring technical and quality concerns are managed, investigating to establish root cause and reporting efficiently.
    • Continuous improvement of existing product lines including: upgrades, obsolescence, cost reduction projects and leading investigations.
    • Working in a motivated and dynamic team to support innovative products and the processes and equipment necessary to manufacture them.
    • Collaborating with multiple disciplines within the team, including, embedded software and electronics design.
    • Capturing, analysing and documenting critical technical requirements for product development.
    • Requiring driving changes through a formalised design change management system.

Key Requirements

  • You'll hold an HND/Degree including some proven industrial design experience within a mechanical design environment.
  • 3D CAD/CAM (Siemens NX preferable).
  • An aptitude for problem solving down to root cause level and the ability to develop solutions for complex problems.
  • Experience of industry standard drafting practices and principles.
  • Effective communicator at both a technical and project level to all stakeholders.

Desirable Requirements

  • Knowledge of machine tool products and their applications.
  • Experience and knowledge of the product development lifecycle.
  • Experience with using ERP systems.
  • Understanding of FEA and results.
