The Role

This position is part of the Saab UK Bluebear Business based in Bedfordshire. As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will provide technical leadership in multidisciplinary design challenges, particularly in unmanned systems.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Supporting the Head of Engineering in design leadership of innovative products.
  • Managing requirement management, design, integration, manufacturing, and testing.
  • Some UK travel may be required for project engagements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform day-to-day CAD design activities and manage multidisciplinary design requirements for aerospace development projects.
  • Support work package delivery, ensuring alignment with schedule, cost, and risk objectives.
  • Contribute to design, integration, verification, and testing throughout the product development lifecycle.
  • Develop innovative product concepts, prototypes, and designs using:
    • CAE, CAD, and CAM tools
    • Solid modelling, surfacing, assemblies, and detailing
  • Select materials and manufacturing methods for:
    • Composite aerospace components
    • Metallic aerospace components
  • Support payload and propulsion system integration, including:
    • All-electric propulsion
    • eVTOL applications
  • Collaborate with the aircraft concepts team to assess aeronautical impacts and contribute to aircraft-level optimisation.
  • Prepare and maintain:
    • Engineering documentation
    • Specifications
    • DFMEAs (Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis)
    • Risk assessments
  • Engage with customers to:
    • Understand requirements
    • Apply emerging technologies where applicable.
  • Assist in programme management:
    • Estimating
    • Planning
    • Dependency and progress tracking

Required Qualifications/Skills

  • Degree or HND in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Experience using SolidWorks, including:
    • Solid modelling
    • Surfacing
    • Assemblies
    • Detailing
    • Bill of Materials (BoM) creation
  • Experience producing:
    • Engineering drawings
    • Technical documentation to recognised standards
  • Ability to support product development from:
    • Concept design → Detailed design → Manufacture → Assembly → Testing
  • Ability to perform first-pass engineering analysis including:
    • Basic FEA (Finite Element Analysis)
    • CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics)
  • Understanding of:
    • Material selection
    • Manufacturing processes for:
      • Composite components
      • Metallic components
  • Knowledge of Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA) principles.
  • Experience in developing prototypes and supporting their:
    • Integration
    • Testing
  • Ability to:
    • Understand customer requirements
    • Translate them into engineering solutions
