Mechanical Design Engineer
Are you the type of engineer who sees a problem and immediately starts thinking of three different ways to solve it?
Do you enjoy taking an idea from a blank sheet of paper through design, build, testing and implementation? Are you equally comfortable creating CAD models, working with suppliers, troubleshooting machinery on the shop floor and getting hands-on during commissioning? If so, this could be the perfect opportunity.
We are working with an innovative and rapidly growing manufacturing business that is investing heavily in its engineering capability. They are looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer who enjoys thinking outside the box, challenging conventional approaches and taking ownership of projects from concept through to delivery.
This is not a role where you'll sit behind a desk producing drawings all day. You'll be involved in every stage of the engineering process, helping to design, develop, improve and implement machinery, equipment and manufacturing processes that have a direct impact on the business.
The Role
As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will become a key part of a highly collaborative engineering team responsible for solving complex manufacturing challenges and developing innovative solutions.
You'll have the freedom to think creatively, test ideas and take projects from concept through to reality.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop bespoke machinery, equipment and manufacturing systems.
- Generate innovative concepts and turn ideas into practical engineering solutions.
- Take ownership of projects from initial concept through design, build, testing and implementation.
- Work closely with manufacturing teams to improve processes, efficiency and reliability.
- Get hands-on with prototype development, installation, commissioning and fault finding.
- Support machinery upgrades, modifications and continuous improvement projects.
- Collaborate with suppliers and external partners to develop new products and manufacturing capabilities.
- Investigate root causes of engineering challenges and develop robust long-term solutions.
- Contribute to the future direction of engineering and manufacturing within the business.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
