Company Overview

Balltec designs, manufactures, and tests high integrity mechanical connectors for critical applications in the global renewable energy and oil and gas sectors. The engineering team creates technical solutions for the transfer of load in moorings, lifting components, and subsea cable connections.

Role Description

The Mechanical Design Engineer will work alongside other engineers and internal company personnel to engineer final design solutions, develop conceptual designs, support existing products, and perform testing/analysis of new and existing products.

General Duties

  • Produce 3D models and manufacturing drawings using Autodesk Inventor.
  • Perform design calculations with MathCAD Prime and apply engineering principles.
  • Support R&D by generating concepts for new mechanical tools and lifting/mooring connectors.
  • Conduct feasibility studies, brainstorming, and develop prototypes for proof-of-concept.
  • Carry out stress analysis, FEA, fatigue assessments, and design validation for offshore/heavy industry.
  • Report technical issues to the Engineering Manager.
  • Oversee prototype build/testing, analyse workshop trial data, and refine designs.
  • Interface with other departments.
  • Support sales, promote the company, and uphold Balltec Quality & HSE Procedures and policies.

Education and Experience

  • Minimum HND in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design Engineering or a related subject (required).
  • Minimum 4 years’ experience in a related field (required).
  • Experience in one of the following fields (desired):
    • Research & development of mechanical products (concept to new product introduction)
    • Hydraulic system design
    • Materials and welding
  • Good IT skills, e.g. Microsoft Office applications (required).
  • Good written and verbal communication skills (required).
  • Right to work in the UK (required).
  • Full UK driving license (preferred, not required).

Required Skills

  • Extensive experience of Computer Aided Design (Autodesk Inventor preferred).
  • Experience of Finite Element Analysis.
  • Extensive experience in the use of engineering principles such as stress-strain and beam theory and the ability to produce calculations to support the design of critical components.
  • Excellent communication skills – must interface successfully with other engineers, non-technical personnel, and with customers to define and implement solutions.
  • Demonstrated initiative in solving challenging problems.
  • Ability to rapidly learn new concepts with little to no supervision.

  • 38 hour working week (averaged over 2 weeks) with alternate Fridays or every Friday afternoon off.
  • 8% company pension contribution.
