Mechanical Design Engineer
Mechanical Design Engineer – Decarbonisation Projects
About the Role
Join Equans, a renowned energies & services contractor and member of the Bouygues Group, in their Carbon Shift business unit. This exciting opportunity is for a Mechanical Design Engineer with a focus on decarbonisation projects, supporting the development of renewable heat and thermal efficiency systems.
Carbon Shift delivers climate action, net zero plans, and energy transition solutions, with expertise in:
- Heat decarbonisation
- Smart buildings & renewables
- EV integration
- Facilities management
- Project delivery & thermal energy efficiency
Key Responsibilities
Project & Technical Design
- Develop and refine mechanical design solutions for:
- Low-carbon retrofit projects
- New-build energy centres
- Heat networks (from RIBA Stage 1 concepts to RIBA Stage 4 technical design)
- Prepare thermal energy simulation models using IES VE, Hysopt, EnergyPRO
- Conduct calculations & engineering analysis to validate system performance
Collaboration & Technical Delivery
- Work alongside electrical engineers, structural/civil designers, architects, and energy specialists
- Prepare design models and draft specifications for project delivery
- Contribute to functional specifications, tender scopes, and design stage reports
- Support job site engineering during construction and commissioning phases
- Undertake non-invasive engineering surveys and interpret data for design integration

Health, Safety & Compliance
- Conduct Designer Risk Assessments for health, safety, and environmental compliance
- Ensure adherence to statutory, regulatory, and contractual requirements
- Align designs with BIM (Building Information Modelling) specialists where needed
Innovation & Market Research
- Assess emerging technologies & design innovations for scalability
- Lead technical options appraisals to evaluate best-practice solutions
Requirements & Skills
Technical Competencies
- Advanced understanding of mechanical design (building services)
- Proficient in: AutoCAD, REVIT, Navisworks, IES VE, Hysopt, EnergyPRO
- Strong familiarity with:
- British Standards & Building Regulations
- HVAC systems, heat pumps & refrigeration technology
- CDM & health & safety regulations
- Ability to prepare draft specifications, stage reports, and tender documentation
Soft Skills
- Exceptional communication (written/verbal)
- Solid grasp of climate resilience, sustainability, and low-carbon design challenges
- Problem-solving mindset with attention to health, safety, and environmental impact
Behavioral Fit
- Willingness to collaborate across disciplines
