Mechanical Design Engineer – Decarbonisation Projects (Carbon Shift Business Unit)
About the Role
Equans, a global industrial group specialising in energies & services, including design, construction, and maintenance of buildings and critical infrastructure, is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to join their Carbon Shift business unit. This consulting team focuses on delivering realisable climate action and net zero plans, with expertise in heat decarbonisation, regeneration, energy transition, smart buildings, and renewables.
Your role will involve developing low-carbon retrofit solutions, leading projects from RIBA 1 concept to RIBA 4 technical design, and collaborating with a multidisciplinary team across disciplines.
Key Responsibilities
Project Engineering & Design
- Develop mechanical design solutions for retrofit decarbonisation projects, heat networks, and new-build energy centres
- Prepare thermal energy simulation models (using IES VE, Hysopt, EnergyPRO) and validate them with engineering analysis
- Design commercial heat pump systems, HVAC improvements, and controls, aligning with energy efficiency and low-carbon targets
- Work closely with electrical engineers, analysts, architects, and structural/civil teams to deliver coordinated designs
Technical & Engineering Tasks
- Create BIM models using AutoCAD, REVIT, and Navisworks for digital project coordination
- Conduct non-invasive engineering surveys and interpret data for design integration
- Support market research to evaluate new heat décarbonisation technologies
- Prepare design specifications, stage reports, and tender documentation
- Produce technical options appraisals to qualify best-available retrofit techniques
- Contribute to Risk Assessments (CDM compliance, health & safety, environmental impact)
- Monitor design compliance with statutes, regulations, and site-specific constraints (e.g., environmental barriers, physical limitations)

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
