Mechanical Design Engineer

Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

Staffordshire | Commutable from Derby, Lichfield, and Burton-upon-Trent DOE | +£50k with competitive benefits

Our market-leading client, established for nearly a century, specialises in designing and manufacturing bespoke rail solutions across the globe. With ambitious growth plans, they are seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join their design and development team based near Burton-upon-Trent.


About the Role

You will be responsible for designing, developing, and technically detailing mechanical systems and locomotive components to ensure they meet functional, safety, manufacturability, and quality standards. Your work will involve close collaboration with manufacturing, operations, and project teams to support:

  • New locomotive builds
  • Refurbishment projects
  • Aftermarket services

Key Responsibilities

Core Design Tasks

  • Develop detailed mechanical designs and 3D models for locomotives, components, and associated systems, aligned with project requirements.
  • Produce accurate technical drawings, specifications, and manufacturing documentation.
  • Perform design calculations, stress analysis, and simulations using tools like FEA (Finite Element Analysis) to validate mechanical integrity and performance.
  • Ensure designs are feasible, safe, and cost-effective through collaboration with:
    • Manufacturing teams
    • Electrical engineers
    • Service and project teams

Project & Quality Assurance

  • Support design reviews, change control, and engineering approval processes.
  • Assist in material and component selection to optimise cost, quality, and reliability.
  • Resolve design issues arising during production, testing, or service.
  • Stay updated with industry trends, standards, and best practices in mechanical design and locomotive engineering.
  • Contribute to Continuous Improvement (CI) initiatives, focusing on design efficiency, standardisation, and innovation.

Requirements

Essential

  • BSc/MSc (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering (or related discipline).
  • Minimum 4 years of experience in mechanical design, ideally within:
    • Locomotive industry
    • Heavy machinery
    • Transportation equipment
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD software, including at least one of:
    • Autodesk Inventor
    • SolidWorks
    • CATIA
    • PTC Creo
  • Strong understanding of:
    • Engineering drawing standards
    • Mechanical systems, materials, and manufacturing processes
    • Stress analysis and simulation tools
  • Exceptional problem-solving, analytical, and organisational skills.

Desirable

  • Experience in premium engineering markets (e.g., rail, defence, energy).
  • Knowledge of UK/EU rail engineering standards (e.g., EN 15227, EN 13749).
  • Familiarity with engineering software platforms (e.g., PLM, ERP systems).
  • Innovative mindset with a focus on practical, cost-effective solutions.

Soft Skills

  • Strong communication and teamwork skills across all levels.
  • Ability to work effectively across departments (e.g., manufacturing, electrical, quality).
