Mechanical Design Engineer (Building Services) - Cardiff

πŸ“ Location: Cardiff πŸ’° Salary: Β£45,000 - Β£55,000 per annum πŸ•’ Employment Type: Full-Time | Permanent

We are recruiting for a Mechanical Design Engineer to join a well-established Building Services consultancy, working across a diverse portfolio of commercial, industrial, and public sector projects.

The successful candidate will have proven experience in mechanical building services design, comfortable delivering projects from concept through to detailed design. This role suits an Intermediate to Senior level engineer with a strong technical background in HVAC and building services systems.


About the Role

  • Lead design and development of mechanical building services solutions, including heating, ventilation, air conditioning, public health, and associated systems.
  • Propose and execute mechanical calculations, specifications, reports, and technical documentation.
  • Coordinate designs in Revit, collaborating closely with multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Apply industry-standard software for mechanical calculations and system design.
  • Attend design team meetings and support end-to-end project delivery.
  • Ensure designs adhere to currencies regulations, standards, and client requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design HVAC systems while maintaining performance, efficiency, and sustainability.
  • Produce accurate calculations for load estimations, ventilation, and energy performance.
  • Draft specifications, technical reports, and coordination drawings (Revit-based).
  • Integrate mechanical systems within MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing) coordination.
  • Conduct technical analysis and resolve design challenges efficiently.
  • Manage external consultant/vendor engagement where applicable.

Requirements

Essential

  • Proven experience as a Mechanical Building Services Design Engineer.
  • Proficiency in Revit for design coordination and project delivery.
  • Experience using Hevacomp and/or MagiCAD for mechanical calculations.
  • In-depth knowledge of HVAC design principles and building services engineering.
  • Basic understanding of thermal modelling software (e.g., IES VE or TAS).
  • Experience in Building Services Consultancy/MEP environments.
  • Degree/HND or equivalent qualification in Mechanical/Building Services Engineering.

Desirable

  • Membership/current progression towards CIBSE (or equivalent).
  • Membership/ambition for IMechE (Incorporated/Chartered Engineer status).
  • Experience in commercial, educational, healthcare, or industrial sectors.
  • Strong communication and client-facing skills.
  • Familiarity with BIM workflows and data management.

Ideal Candidate

We are seeking an engineer with a dedicated Building Services backgroundβ€”not a general mechanical, manufacturing, or product-focused role. Expected skills and experience include:

βœ” Design expertise in HVAC, water services, and energy systems. βœ” Hands-on experience with building services software (e.g., Revit, Hevacomp, or MagiCAD). βœ” Critical thinking for mechanical calculations and code compliance. βœ” Ability to deliver on-time and on-budget within a consultant environment.
