About the Role
Motorola Solutions is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to join our Silent Sentinel team. This role involves designing enclosures, mechanisms, and other hardware to specifications targeting rugged environments such as:
- Extreme temperatures (−40°C)
- Marine conditions
- Military standards (MIL STD)
The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, capable of working autonomously with access to support when needed. Collaboration with internal and external stakeholders will be critical, empowering high-quality design, manufacture, and assembly processes.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop critical enclosures and mechanisms using SolidWorks, ensuring compliance with project requirements.
- Produce engineering drawings and build guides clear enough for production, quality, and manufacturing stakeholders.
- Provide production troubleshooting and prototype testing, verifying designs against functional and environmental specifications.
- Maintain a keen eye for detail when reviewing technical packages before release.
- Travel between Ware site (main office) and Sandy site (machine shop) as needed.
- Communicate effectively, writing clear documentation for all stages of the design process.
- Offer design case alternatives and defend decisions to peers and leadership, employing calculations, analysis, and supporting visuals.

Familiarity with the Following Skills is a Must
✔ Consistent 3D modelling in SolidWorks (with subsidiary Bill of Materials (BoM) production). ✔ Understanding of materials and coatings, plating methods, fasteners. ✔ Knowledge of manufacturing constraints and design-for-manufacture/assembly best practices. ✔ Ability to identify proper eternal (e.g., IP67) sealing methods and documentation techniques. ✔ Experience with product quality testing of prototypes. ✔ Strong grasp of drafting practices and ability to collaborate within a design team.
Advantageous Skills
✔ Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and thermal simulation background. ✔ Proven ability to integrate aesthetic and ergonomic considerations into machinery.
Basic Requirements
All candidates must meet the following:
- Fluency in spoken and written English
- Practical expertise with SolidWorks for technical drawings, assembly models, and BoM generation
- Understanding of fasteners, plating, coatings, and coating techniques
- Willingness to travel between Ware and Sandy sites on short notice
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Self-motivated and quick learner, able to work independently and within a team
- Demonstrates a pragmatic problem-solving approach
- Experience with IP ratings and design-to-standard protections (preferably IP67)
- Ability to justify design decisions with supporting calculations, analysis, or documentation
