Role Description

As a Mechanical Design Engineer at Solent Automation Ltd, you will design and develop mechanical systems and components for robotic packing and palletising solutions in FMCG environments. On a day-to-day basis, you will:

  • Create and modify 3D models and detailed drawings using CAD software
  • Perform mechanical calculations
  • Support prototype build and testing
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to refine product concepts, select suitable materials and components, and ensure designs meet performance, safety, and cost requirements
  • Prepare technical documentation
  • Support manufacturing and assembly
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of existing systems

This is a full-time, on-site role based in Portsmouth.

Qualifications

  • Strong foundation in Mechanical Engineering and Design Engineering, with the ability to apply engineering principles to practical automation solutions.
  • Hands-on experience in Machine Design and Product Design, including designing mechanisms, assemblies, and systems for manufacturing environments.
  • Proficiency in Computer-Aided Design (CAD) tools (e.g., SolidWorks, Inventor, or similar) for 3D modeling, detailed drawings, and design revisions.
  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering, Design Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Ability to interpret technical specifications, standards, and customer requirements, with strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Experience with robotic or automation systems, motion control, or FMCG manufacturing equipment is an advantage.
  • Effective communication skills and ability to collaborate with engineering, production, and project teams.
  • Attention to detail, commitment to safety, and willingness to work on-site in a workshop and factory environment.
