Senior Mechanical Design Engineer
Location: East Midlands – commutable from Derby, Leicester and Nottingham
Salary: £45,000+ negotiable + dependents’ expenses + benefits
Our client boasts almost half a century of expertise in the design, development and manufacture of bespoke automation and robotic systems across a diverse range of industry sectors. They are recognised as one of the leading automation system solution providers in the UK. Supported by continued success and a strategic growth plan, they are now seeking a Senior Leading / Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to strengthen their successful, innovative team and deliver special purpose automation machinery projects.
About the Role
Based near Leicester, the Senior Mechanical Design Engineer will be responsible for designing, detailing, and delivering complex special purpose machine projects from initial order acceptance to final customer handover. Key responsibilities include:
- Leading multiple projects in parallel, ensuring they are completed on time, within budget, and by customer specification
- Collaborating effectively with customers, suppliers, and internal teams to communicate expectations and constraints
- Designing and overseeing projects from concept to delivery while carrying out periodic design reviews to guarantee quality and reliability

Key Responsibilities
Project Delivery & Design
- Attend sales handover meetings to commit to project timelines and budgets
- Perform mechanical design and detailing using 3D CAD tools within allocated project schedules -.schedule regular Design Reviews to optimise feasibility, cost efficiency and operational robustness
- Ensure designs meet customer requirements while minimising development risks
- Achieve the Design Pass Off with the customer upon completion
- Convert designs into accurate Bill of Materials (BOM) while managing budgets
Supplier & Electrical Coordination
- Negotiate with external suppliers to source cost-effective materials aligned with project budgets and timelines
- Work closely with the electrical team to bridge communication gaps during the design phase
- Ensure build folders and technical documentation are prepared for machine assemblers for a smooth construction process
Fieldwork & Customer Engagement
- Conduct site visits to understand requirements and take detailed measurements
- Engage with customers to clarify project specifications and site considerations
- Communicate directly with teams on their behalf

Design Review & Risk Assessment
- Draft and evaluate design alternatives during sales quotations to refine risk, cost, and timings
- Improve design concepts at an early stage to reduce risks, project costs, and lead times
- Monitor and report on regular project timelines, budgets, and design progress to stakeholders
Technology & Compliance
- Evaluate mechanical designs for the proper use of all parts, samples, and related drawings
- Ensure Machinery Directive compliance during the design and build phase
- Maintain a Technical Construction File (TCF) featuring manuals, risk assessments, and project documentation
Team Leadership & Support
- Guide and assist fitters, electricians, and junior engineers in their technical tasks
- Perform site-specific risk assessments on machines to confirm engineering compliance
- Lead projects through development and installation, addressing issues proactively and efficiently
- Act robustly within Health and Safety policies and ensure strict adherence
