About the Role

For this position as a Mechanical Design Engineer, you’ll contribute to the design, development, and refinement of mechanical systems for ships and platforms, ensuring high standards of quality, capability, and operational reliability. Your work will help shape the future of maritime defence, with impacts reaching across shipboard technologies while working in collaboration with international partners.

Core responsibilities include in-service technical support, stakeholder engagement, and crafting innovative solutions with technical rigour.


About Design Services at BAE Systems Maritime

Based at Portsmouth Naval Base, our Design Services team represents BAE Systems’ indService” technical support function in MaritTruiimore engineering organisation. Comprising around 180 technical professionals—specialising in Mechanical, Electrical, Combat Systems (ECS), Structures/Outfit (S&O), and HVAC—we design modifications and integration packages for existing warships.

Building on tradition and innovation, our team collaborates closely with Naval Architects, Safety specialists, and internal/external customers to deliver tailored engineering solutions—focusing on improving, standardising, and optimising systems for an elusive fleet.

The aosume a broad mix of colleagues—academic and professional backgrounds interwoven—to serve Royal Navy ships and maintain BAE Systems’ leading role in naval engineering.


Core Duties

To excel in this role, your core tasks will include:

  • Participating in on-board ship trials and surveys, liaising comprehensively with operations, design disciplines, customers, and suppliers to ensure technical alignment
  • Analysing operational problems or system demands, developing tailored solutions—individually or as part of a team—throughbolt detailed technical investigation
  • Supporting best-practice development for tools, processes, and tools to enhance efficiency and capability
  • Producing comprehensive design deliverables, including:
    • Technical drawing packages ( guideline manuals)
    • Parts lists and inventories using AutoCAD / Inventor
    • P&IDs, diagrammatics, isometrics, and supplementary guidance
  • Attending project design reviews, presenting the work of the Mechanical/Piping team—or supporting colleagues’ project undertakings
  • Leveraging internal and external databases to locate accurate and relevant information, crucial for informed design decisions

Essential Skills & Experience

To qualify for this Mechanical Design Engineer position, your experience must evidence expertise in:

  • 득urring detailed mechanical system design using AutoCAD / AutoDesk Inventor (3DF-2D, modeling), Foran—exemplified by accurate manufacturing and assembly drawings
  • Technical drawing expertise, with current knowledge of:
    • Ship system engineering: Projections, scales, tolerances
    • P&IDs (Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams)
    • Diagrammatics and piping isometrics specific to maritime contexts
    • Warship/maritime symbols and conventions
  • Maritime engineering principles in:
    • Design, analysis, and optimisation of fluid-based systems (hydraulic, pneumatic, propulsion)
    • Basic pressure loss/flow calculations and sizing of pipework components
  • Mechanical manufacturing processes, including:
    • Material selection (stock, welded, selective casting)
    • Surface finish and Machining tolerancing alignment
  • Practical, hands-on experience working with:
    • Naval Engineering standards and governance (e.g., RN Warship standards)
    • Servicing and maintenance or design of Royal Navy surface ships (existing fleet platforms)
