I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Regulatory Alignment & Technical Documentation
- Ensure compliance with EU/UK law: CE, UKCA marking & mobile machinery directives.
- Prepare technical documentation, risk assessments and declarations of conformity.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of defence, safety and regulatory frameworks (e.g., Machinery Regulation, OHSAS standards).
- Coordinate with approved/notified bodies as needed.
- Manage customer acceptance activities, including audits, inspections and compliance evidence.
- Support defence-sector traceability and customer-specific quality requirements.
- Handle environmental/durability testing and regional compliance matters.
Structural & Materials Optimisation
- Conduct topology, shape and size optimisation to enhance performance while reducing weight.
- Apply simulation-driven design for geometry refinement and load path analysis.
- Lead material selection, balancing performance, sustainability, manufacturing constraints and cost.
- Assist suppliers in evaluating advanced material technologies.
- Validate optimisation decisions through prototyping and mechanical testing.
Risk & Quality Assurance
- Conduct and document FMEA (Failure Mode, PFMEA, DFMEA) to compliance standards.
- Implement and verify risk reduction measures at every design stage.
- Align designs to defence-sector safety, tolerances and standard expectations.
Experience & Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical/Automotive/Aerospace Engineering (or closely related field). Master’s/postgraduate studies in: mechanical design, structural engineering or materials science (advantageous).
- Additional training in CE/UKCA conformity, functional safety or defence standards (linked benefit).
