About us
National Gas is securing Britain’s energy. We transport gas throughout Great Britain, repair and maintain gas pipelines, and manage the meters that allow millions of homes and businesses to access the energy they need. We are the national gas network, providing secure energy to power Britain, achieve net zero, and maintain our industrial competitiveness.
About the role
We're delivering critical infrastructure projects that keep energy flowing safely and reliably across the country. We're looking for an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to provide technical leadership, coordinate complex engineering activities, and ensure the successful delivery of major capital projects from concept through to commissioning.
You'll play a pivotal role in the successful delivery of major infrastructure projects. Acting as the mechanical engineering focal point within project teams, you'll provide expert technical guidance, coordinate multidisciplinary design activities, and ensure engineering solutions are safe, compliant, and fit for purpose.
You'll work closely with project managers, operational teams, design consultants, contractors, and supply chain partners to drive projects forward while maintaining the highest standards of safety, quality, and engineering governance.
What you'll be doing
- Acting as the mechanical engineering subject matter expert across major capital projects.
- Coordinating design activities and deliverables to ensure projects remain aligned with schedules, stage gates, and key milestones.
- Managing external design consultants, contractors, and delivery partners to achieve high-quality outcomes.
- Reviewing, challenging, and assuring engineering designs against National Gas standards, specifications, and industry best practice.
- Leading multidisciplinary design reviews, constructability assessments, technical assurance activities, and risk reviews.
- Ensuring compliance with CDM Regulations, process safety requirements, environmental standards, and engineering governance processes.
- Managing engineering change processes, including technical queries, design modifications, concessions, deviations, and change controls.
- Reviewing and approving engineering documentation such as P&IDs, mechanical layouts, drawings, specifications, technical calculations, and reports.
- Supporting procurement activities through the preparation and review of technical scopes, specifications, and tender documentation.
- Providing technical support during construction, commissioning, project handover, and close-out phases.
- Identifying opportunities to improve engineering standards, project delivery processes, and ways of working.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
