Requirements

Essential qualifications:

  • GCSE in Mathematics (grade 4–9 / C or above)
  • GCSE in Physics or Combined Science (grade 4 (C) or above)
  • BTEC (Vocational) Level 2 in Construction & Built Env./Electrical Eng./Mechanic (grade Pass / Merit / Distinction)

Desirable qualifications:

  • GCSE in Mathematics (higher grade 6–9)
  • Vocational / BTEC / NVQ / T Level in Plumbing, Electrical Installation, BMS, HVAC, or o (grade Pass / Merit / Distinction)

Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.

Other requirements:

  • Must be suitable for Level 3 study and not already hold a related degree, HND or postgraduate qualification
  • Able to work as part of a team and communicate with company staff and the public
  • Reliable with good time management and able to manage workload and meet deadlines
  • Willingness to work at height or in confined spaces with PPE and training provided
  • Commitment to attending college, completing assignments, and meeting apprenticeship requirements
  • Interest in engineering construction and facilities management
  • Must integrate sustainability considerations into work in line with the National Theatres' environmental goals

Responsibilities

What you'll do at work:

  • Learn and fulfil the requirements of a building services and maintenance, mechanical and electrical technician
  • Attend day to day project progress, design and specification meetings
  • Comply with the NT’s policies and procedures
  • Carry out other reasonable duties as requested by the Senior Facilities Building Services Manager
  • Work as part of a facilities team supporting building services maintenance, fault-finding and installation
  • Communicate with staff, customers and members of the public

What you'll learn:

  • Apply appropriate building services engineering principles, techniques, and methods, including mathematical, scientific, and technical know-how, to building services engineering and the construction or manufacturing process
  • Apply key principles, techniques and methods of data and technical information collection, analysis and evaluation to support the delivery of building services engineering models (such as Building Information Modelling), designs, and technical solutions
  • Operate computer-based software packages, such as Computer Aided Design (CAD) or modelling software (Revit) to produce and present technical information and documentation with relevant conventions and engineering terminology
  • Apply statutory health, safety and welfare policies, procedures, and regulations in the building services engineering environment, using risk management processes, procedures, and documentation
  • Support and contribute to the production or modification of building services engineering technical solutions in accordance with relevant industry standards, procedures, codes of practice, regulations, and legislation, such as the Building Safety legislation.
  • Apply principles of sustainable development, including those relating to United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG), environmental policies and legislations in building services engineering projects, recognising the need to reduce carbon use, lower emissions, and wider sustainability
  • Plan, carry out and manage own work in line with quality assurance systems and processes, recognising the wider implications to customer needs, and within cost and resource limitations
  • Consider equality, diversity, and inclusion in the delivery of building services engineering projects
  • Apply document control processes and procedures using the approved processes, maintaining quality compliance when creating or amending engineering documentation
  • Communicate using appropriate methods for the audience, and incorporate relevant and appropriate terms, standards, and data
  • Apply ethical principles to building services engineering projects, including the secure use of data and information
  • Plan, undertake and review their own professional competence, regularly updating and reviewing their CPD to improve performance

Training schedule:

  • The apprenticeship is split between the National Theatre (NT) and City of Westminster College (CWC).
  • The apprentice will study for a Level 3 Building Services Design technician apprenticeship alongside workplace learning.
  • Time will be provided during the week for study and attendance at college and completion of assignments is a requirement of the role.

  • 35 hours per week, including 6 hours per week off the job training.
  • Normal working hours are 8:30am to 4pm.
  • Occasional changes may be required to meet business needs.
  • The role may involve working at height or in confined spaces.
  • PPE and training will be provided.

After completing this Level 3 Mechanical & Electrical Apprenticeship, candidates will be qualified to work as Building Services Technicians with skills in mechanical and electrical systems. This can lead to roles such as Maintenance Engineer Facilities Technician or M&E Technician, or further study in Engineering or Building Services Management leading to senior technical or supervisory roles within facilities management or the built environment.
