Mechanical Engineer

Mechanical Engineer (Full-Time) – Midland Metropolitan University Hospital & Sandwell General Hospital

Equans is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to join our team in Smethwick and West Bromwich, working across Midland Metropolitan University Hospital (MMUH) and Sandwell General Hospital. This is a 40-hour-per-week role with a competitive salary band of £32,000 – £35,000 per annum, based on skills and experience, plus a comprehensive benefits package.


Job Overview & Responsibilities

You will play a proactive and hands-on role ensuring the reliability, efficiency, and compliance of critical mechanical systems across healthcare environments:

  • Core Areas of Responsibility

    • Work with systems including ventilation, pumps, compressors, boilers, medical gases, heating, hot/cold water systems
    • Conduct diagnostics, fault-finding, and repairs on complex mechanical systems in line with relevant standards, legislation, and procedures
    • Maintain safety and operational compliance for all interventions
  • Reactive Support

    • Act as the first point of contact for after-hours (night shifts) Building Management System (BMS) alerts and incoming support requests
    • Assess, log, and triage issues — escalating to relevant team members as necessary
    • Document and handover all incidents to the Helpdesk team upon transfer of duty, ensuring continuity
  • Preventative & Maintenance Excellence

    • Obtain and demonstrate Competent Person status for specialized systems such as:
      • Ventilation systems
      • Complex water supply systems
      • Medical gas installations
    • Carry out Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) duties in accordance with scheduled programs and operational guidelines
  • System-Specific Competencies

    • Shoulder responsibility for health service infrastructure functioning 24/7
    • Align with clinical environment standards, including NHS guidance and healthcare-specific protocols

Who We’re Looking for

Essential経験・Qualifications

  • Hold either City & Guilds NVQ Level 2 or 3, or an equivalent qualified apprenticeship in a relevant engineering discipline
  • Experience within a maintenance environment discussed via workorders, failure analysis or blended (theoretical + practicals)
  • Evidence of the right to work in the UK is mandatory and put to reasonable checking

Desirable & Nice-to-haves

  • Approved Competent Person/Authorised Person status for:
    • Building ventilation systems (e.g., CIBSE standards)
    • Pressure systems (e.g., UNI Standards or equivalent EMCER)
  • Preference given to candidates with backgrounds in healthcare facility maintenance or medical infrastructure repair
  • Familiarity with critically-sourced environments (systems influencing patient health and safety)

Additional Legal Considerations

  • Standard DBS check requirement — failure to meet clearance will disqualify applications
  • No relocation support available for this role; role is exclusively UK/EU-based only
