Commercial Modifications Engineering Europe – Mechanical Stress Engineer (Contractor)

The Role

Commercial Modifications Engineering Europe is seeking an experienced Mechanical Stress Engineer engaged as a contaminent worker / contractor to support certification of aircraft modifications. This contract position will primarily deliver structural substantiation documentation for interior modifications and associated interfaces to demonstrate compliance with relevant regulatory and customer requirements, as defined in the company’s Design Organisation Handbook (DOH).


Contract Summary

  • Role Type: Contingent worker / contractor (fixed-term or statement-of-work engagement)
  • Primary Focus: Delivery of substantiation documentation for aircraft interior modifications (seating, monuments, LOPAs, PSUs, LRUs)
  • Location: Frimley, UK
  • Reporting Line: Structures Engineering Manager
  • Collaboration: Engage with global engineering teams across multiple time zones

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as a contracted technical resource, reporting to the Structures Engineering Manager, and collaborating with global engineering teams to identify certification requirements and define substantiating solutions for active and upcoming modification programmes.
  • Lead and deliver certification activities and structural substantiation documentation to ensure compliance with design and airworthiness requirements.
  • Compile, author, and critically review structural substantiation documentation including:
    • Product certification and integration substantiation for new seating, monuments, and furniture installations (e.g., galleys, lavatories, class dividers, first-class suites, VVIP furnishings).
    • Cabin interior changes such as LOPAs, Passenger Service Unit (PSU) layouts, LRU installations, and related configurations.
    • Primary-structure considerations where applicable (e.g., antenna installations, fuselage cutouts).
  • Provide detailed calculations, stress reports, load paths, and justification in compliance with regulatory expectations and company DOH guidelines.
  • Support customer-facing certification meetings (ITCM, PDR, CDR, FAI) as the company’s contracted representative.
  • Ensure documentation is auditable, traceable, and structured for regulatory review and customer approval.
  • Promote a safety-focused culture focused on quality and continuous improvement within the engineering organization.

Deliverables (Examples)

  • Complete structural substantiation reports for interior modifications, adhering to DOH templates and certification plans.
  • Hand calculation packages and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) models/results.
  • Certification compliance matrices, load cases, and assumptions records.

Contractor Requirements

  • Ability to work effectively as a contingent worker/contractor under a statement of work, meeting milestones and deliverable acceptance criteria.
  • Familiarity with ***/DOH documentation expectations and adherence to company security, confidentiality, and data handling policies for contractors.
  • Experience in delivering substantiation documentation within defined schedules and quality expectations.
  • Hybrid role: Minimum of 3 days/week on-site, 2 days remote (flexible throughout contract term).

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Aerospace, Aeronautical, or Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent).
  • 5+ years of relevant experience in aircraft structures/stress, with demonstrable experience in modification substantiation (preferably interiors).

  • Recent experience with EASA Part 21J Design Organisation (or equivalent) is highly desirable.
  • In-depth knowledge of aircraft interior modification practices, installations, and interfaces, including primary and secondary structures related to interior modifications.
  • Proficiency in:
    • Hand calculations using classical stress analysis techniques.
    • Finite Element Analysis (FEA) tools for producing traceable models and results.
  • Strong technical report writing skills to produce certification-ready substantiation packages.
  • Working knowledge of EASA and FAA airworthiness requirements (e.g., CS-25, FAR 25, ETSO/JTSO).
  • Attention to detail, professional integrity, and ability to work under contract schedules.
  • Capacity to manage multiple programmes concurrently, prioritise workloads, and adapt to evolving project demands.
  • Exceptional communication skills for technical engagement with internal and external stakeholders.
