Mechanical Engineer - Water
The Opportunity
Water isn’t just a resource; it’s the lifeblood of our communities. As we navigate the ambitious demands of the AMP8 regulatory cycle, the choices we make today will define the environmental resilience of Wales and the South West for generations.
At Stantec, our water sector teams across Cardiff, Bristol, Taunton, and Exeter are growing rapidly. We are moving beyond standard engineering to deliver narrative-led, sustainable solutions for the region's major utility frameworks. To achieve this, we are looking for passionate Mechanical Engineers to join our collaborative, award-winning team. If you want to design with community in mind and tackle the realities of climate change and water scarcity head-on, your next chapter starts here.
About the Role
This is an invitation to bring your expertise to a team that influences the entire project lifecycle. Whether you are based in Wales or across the South West, you won’t just be sitting behind a desk; you will be an integral part of transforming ideas into reality.
Your work will span from early-stage feasibility and innovative optioneering right through to detailed design, collaborative 3D modeling, and on-site construction support. You will act as a pivotal technical bridge—collaborating closely with Project Managers, clients, supply chain partners, and multidisciplinary design teams to deliver high-quality, resilient water and wastewater infrastructure.
Your Impact
At Stantec, we don't just fill roles; we empower people to make a tangible difference. In this role, this will include:
- Engineering Excellence:
- Designing and sizing complex pumping and aeration systems.
- Producing robust technical specifications.
- Shaping Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) and General Arrangement drawings.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
