Job Description: Mechanical Engineering Team Lead

Socode are pleased to represent a key client in their search for a Mechanical Engineering Team responsible for the specification, design, verification, and introduction into manufacturing of components, sub-systems, and technologies for OEM's.

Why would you want to join?

  • A genuine player-manager role: lead and line manage a small, agile team of engineers, while staying hands-on with fluidic and mechanical design as a principal-level contributor.
  • Real ownership from day one - you'll own the team's budget, shape its structure and talent pipeline, and develop the capability, tools, and processes needed to deliver against quality, cost, and delivery targets.
  • Work at the cutting edge of mechanical, fluidic, and acoustic design coming together in genuinely challenging engineering problems.
  • High visibility, working closely with the Engineering Director and collaborating with other team leads to deliver on a number of R&D projects.
  • Customer-facing variety, including systems integration support, design consultancy, and onsite technical training, with international travel.
  • A collaborative, values-driven culture that is professional, energetic, innovative, and vibrant.

Reasons to use Rodeo

Iโ€™m in my final year doing Economics and I donโ€™t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer โ€” it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) donโ€™t need a masters. Letโ€™s look at the ones youโ€™d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet โ€” that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right โ€” and where to focus when applying.

The desired Team Lead will have the following experience:

  • A degree in a STEM subject (Engineering, Maths, Physics, or similar).
  • Proven experience leading and managing mechanical teams in an R&D environment - you're comfortable balancing line management with your own technical contribution.
  • At least 10 years' experience in high-volume, hi-tech manufacturing environments.
  • A track record of taking new product developments through the full lifecycle, from specification and design through verification and into manufacturing.
  • Strong working knowledge of SolidWorks.
  • An understanding of best-practice mechanical design, including acoustic, fluidic, and mechanical considerations, ideally with a DFM mindset.
  • A confident communicator who can adjust their style for peers, managers, and customers alike; influential in technical discussions, decisive, and resilient under conflicting demands.

What will they be doing?

  • Leading and line managing the Mechanical team - structuring it for success, building the talent pipeline and succession plans, and continually developing its capability and capacity.
  • Leading all new product development activities for the team, including creating product and design specifications, hands-on fluidic and mechanical design, concept and design reviews, sub-system testing, design verification, and introducing new products into manufacturing.
  • Prioritising and coordinating the team's work, ensuring the right resource supports every NPD project on the product roadmap.
  • Ensuring adherence to the PLM process while proactively driving process improvements to boost efficiency, quality, and time-to-market during development.
  • Tracking and helping to resolve technical and process issues to ensure the successful introduction of new technologies, identifying risks where new products will stress existing processes.
  • Providing technical support to customers' integration projects, including systems integration, design consultancy, and onsite training.
