Project Overview

For more than 75 years, Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) has supported the UK Government’s nuclear defence strategy and the Continuous at Sea Deterrent. They use nuclear know-how and technical expertise to provide innovative solutions that support the UK’s counterterrorism and nuclear threat reduction activities. Like Bechtel, they create and maintain a safe operating culture where safety is front and centre of everything they do. From building state-of-the-art facilities, to supporting Production, Science, Engineering and Technology programmes, the management of Environment, Safety, Health and Wellbeing underpins all activities at AWE.

Bechtel is collaborating with AWE as an integrated team to deliver the preliminary design for the facilities within the Future Materials Campus. Since 2023, Bechtel has provided delivery and technical support, ensuring the project is completed on schedule and within budget.

Job Summary

This position is for a Mechanical Equipment Engineer who will work a multi-year contract on a United Kingdom (UK) nuclear infrastructure programme for which Bechtel are providing the Project Management and Engineering services. This project is at the conceptual design phases driving a programme involving a multi-billion-pound investment in nuclear and non-nuclear facilities.

The Mechanical Equipment Engineer will be a proactive and driven individual who will support the Engineering Manager via the Project Engineer for Process, Plant and Equipment (PPE), as the technical representative for Mechanical engineering activities within the PPE team. You will assist in the engineering design efforts, which may include the delivery of technical documents such philosophy for containment systems, integration concepts, quality checks, and overall project delivery. You will be involved in preparing technical reports, studies, design, calculations using engineering software and supporting systems, and procurement documentation. In addition, you will participate in design reviews, and assure comments are addressed by facilitating their resolution to the satisfaction of the reviewers for the delivery of approved products.

You will have the ability to work independently, use engineering judgment, and devise cost effective solutions to solving problems. In addition, you will help others and respond to requests for help in solving technical or procedural problems and issues. You will be responsible for assisting with discipline work process execution in a technically adequate manner and in accordance with company, contract, and industry codes and standards.

"This position is designated as part-time telework per our global telework policy and may require at least three days of in-person attendance per week at the assigned office or project. Weekly in-person schedules will be determined by the individual and their supervisor, in consultation with functional or project leadership”.

Major Responsibilities

  • Participate in optioneering and prepare design philosophies for mechanical equipment.
  • Prepare mechanical equipment deliverables including basis of design (BoD), system definitions, calculations, performance standards, equipment specifications, layouts, inspection plans, test plans, etc. and review deliverables from other disciplines in line with requirements, design criteria, approved procedures, and applicable codes and standards.
  • Designing equipment including dissolvers, ion exchange columns, precipitation vessels, storage and buffer tanks, condensers, etc.
  • Produce drawings and 3D models to support facility designs through Concept Design.
  • Support studies assessing the environmental impact and sustainability of the proposed design and construction approach.
  • Take part in workshops such as 3D model reviews, HAZID, HAZOP, constructability reviews, and value engineering, while checking compliance with applicable safety and quality standards.
  • Provide inputs to safety cases and regulatory documentation.
  • Participate in the preparation of Interface Control Documents (ICDs) as well as review and resolution of interfaces.
  • Manufacturing, fabrication, and installation requirements.
  • Lifecycle documentation: operations, maintenance, material movement philosophies, and decommissioning.

Education And Experience Requirements

  • A recognised bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from an accredited college or university.
  • Minimum of 6 years postgraduation design experience with minimum of 3 years in nuclear industry desirable.
  • A Chartered Engineer

Required Knowledge And Skills

  • Experience in designing mechanical equipment for the nuclear industry
  • End-to-end mechanical design capability (concept to implementation)
  • Strong mechanical system and equipment design expertise
  • Proficiency in engineering calculations and technical documentation
  • Knowledge of engineering codes, standards, and legislation
  • Experience defining test and verification strategies (FAT/SAT)
  • Ability to identify and mitigate technical risks
  • Multidisciplinary integration (mechanical, electrical, civil)
  • Supplier evaluation and technical delivery support
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong organisational skills.
  • Relevant industrial experience. General nuclear experience a plus.
  • Must be able to obtain Security Clearence (SC) for access to the AWE Site.

The role will be based primarily at Aldermaston UK, however travel to Bechtel’s London office (near Covent Garden) may also be required. Flexibility in work locations includes three days per week working at the project site and two days working from home or the Bechtel office. This arrangement will change as project needs adjust.

The position is open to United Kingdom (UK) Nationals only.

This position is also subject to a successful interview and agreement upon terms and conditions of employment.
