Mechanical Fitter

Mechanical Fitter – Maintenance Department

A fantastic opportunity has arisen within the Chapelcross Maintenance Department for a Mechanical Fitter to join a multi-disciplinary team, responsible for the examination, inspection, maintenance, and testing of critical plant and equipment. This role supports the Plant Maintenance Schedule and statutory requirements while contributing to the safe, efficient, and successful delivery of site and company objectives.

The Role

This hands-on, diverse position is ideal for someone who is motivated, adaptable, customer-focused, and eager to expand their capabilities in a dynamic, safety-conscious environment. Ideal for those seeking a four-day week (07.30–17.15, Monday–Thursday).

In this role, you will:

  • Support critical plant maintenance, ensuring reliability, compliance, and operational safety across all site activities.
  • Conduct essential maintenance activities, adhering to regulatory, safety, quality, and environmental standards.
  • Operate within a multi-disciplinary team, working effectively to maintain smooth operations.
  • Ensure ongoing continuous improvement, delivering precise and compliant maintenance work.
  • Perform core duties, including:
    • Completing mandatory training and maintaining accurate maintenance records.
    • Applying technical expertise with care, ensuring compliance with Health, Safety, Security, Environmental, and Quality (HSSEQ) policies.
    • Keeping skills and safe working practices current, including hand and power tool usage.

You will also contribute to maintenance scheduling, minimising downtime while upholding high standards of safety and performance.


Key Responsibilities

At the core of this role, you will:

  • Play a vital role in the reliable and safe performance of plant and equipment across the site.
  • Support regulatory compliance, including:
    • Adherence to HM Our Health and Safety at Work Act (HASAW) and work instructions.
    • Remaining updated with latest safety protocols and risk assessments.
  • Operate collaboratively, ensuring smooth teamwork while maintaining individual accountability.
  • Expand skills through structured training, contributing to preventative and reactive maintenance efforts.
  • Document all work accurately, ensuring paperwork aligns with compliance requirements.

Who We’re Looking For

We seek a skilled, self-motivated Mechanical Fitter with a **strong technical background, adaptability, and a commitment to safe working practices. Your experience should demonstrate:

Essential Requirements

  • Time-served Mechanical Fitter with formal qualifications (e.g., one of the following):

    • City & Guilds
    • BTEC (NationalQualification Level)*
    • ONC (Ordinal National Certificate)
    • NVQ Level 3
  • Alternatively, substantial technical experience may be accepted where formal qualifications are not held—we encourage applications from candidates proving hands-on competence.

  • Proven ability to work effectively in a team within a safety-focused environment, valuing adherence to HSSEQ principles.

  • Strong awareness of compliance, risk control, and workplace safety practices.
