About The Role

As a result, alongside several consortium partners; Balfour Beatty have been selected by bp (British Petroleum) to construct a first-of-a-kind fully integrated gas-fired power station with carbon capture and storage which is a key driving force behind plans to make Teesside the UK’s first decarbonised industrial cluster.

Balfour Beatty is seeking a dynamic Mechanical Fitter to contribute to the Net Zero Teesside (NZT) project based at our site in Redcar and Cleveland.

What you'll be doing

Role Overview

A Preservation Mechanical Fitter is responsible for carrying out preservation activities on mechanical equipment to ensure it remains in optimal condition during storage, installation, and commissioning phases. The role involves applying preventative maintenance procedures, corrosion protection, and ensuring equipment readiness for operation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform preservation activities on mechanical equipment such as pumps, turbines, compressors, valves, piping systems, and rotating equipment
  • Apply preservation methods including lubrication, protective coatings, vapor phase inhibitors, and wrapping/sealing techniques
  • Inspect equipment regularly to identify corrosion, damage, or deterioration
  • Maintain preservation records, logs, and reports in line with project or client requirements
  • Follow manufacturer guidelines and preservation procedures for all equipment
  • Carry out flushing, drying, and cleanliness checks where required
  • Ensure correct storage conditions (temperature, humidity control, environmental protection) are maintained
  • Assist with installation and pre-commissioning tasks when required
  • Identify and report defects or non-compliance issues
  • Work closely with QA/QC teams to meet quality standards

Health, Safety & Environment (HSE)

  • Adhere strictly to site safety rules, permit systems, and risk assessments
  • Use appropriate PPE at all times
  • Ensure safe handling of chemicals and preservation materials
  • Report hazards, incidents, and near-misses
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment

Who we're looking for

Skills & Experience

  • Proven experience as a Mechanical Fitter, ideally within oil & gas, construction, or heavy industry
  • Knowledge of preservation techniques and standards (e.g., oil flushing, nitrogen blanketing, grease packing)
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, manuals, and procedures
  • Familiarity with rotating and static mechanical equipment
  • Strong attention to detail and inspection skills
  • Good communication and teamwork skills

Qualifications

  • Relevant mechanical engineering or fitting qualification (e.g., NVQ Level 2/3 or equivalent)
  • CSCS card or relevant trade certification (site dependent)
  • HSE certifications (e.g., safety passport) preferred
  • Additional certifications (e.g., confined space, working at height) are advantageous

Typical Working Environment

  • Oil & gas plants, refineries, petrochemical sites, or construction projects
  • Onshore or offshore assignments
  • May involve working shifts, overtime, or working in challenging environmental conditions
