About The Role:

We are looking for an experienced Mechanical Engineer to join the team at the Woodsmith Mine Project, one of the UK's largest and most exciting infrastructure developments.

As Mechanical Engineer, you will play a key role in ensuring the safe design, installation, operation, inspection and maintenance of mechanical systems and equipment across the surface operations of the mine. Supporting construction, shaft sinking, tunnelling, commissioning and operational activities, you will ensure all work is delivered safely, efficiently and in compliance with UK mining regulations, engineering standards and company policies.

This is an excellent opportunity to work on a world-class mining project within a safety-focused and technically challenging environment.

Location: Woodsmith Underground Mine, Sneaton, Whitby YO22 5JE

Hours of work: This position operates on a continental shift pattern, providing excellent work-life balance through extended rest periods.

  • 8 shifts on / 6 shifts off
  • 12-hour shifts (days and nights)
    • Day Shift: 06:00 – 18:00
    • Night Shift: 18:00 – 06:00

Additional flexibility may be required during planned shutdowns, major maintenance activities, commissioning phases and other project-critical periods.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide mechanical engineering support across both surface and underground mining infrastructure.
  • Support the design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of mechanical systems and equipment.
  • Carry out inspections, audits and technical reviews to ensure all installations meet statutory, company and engineering standards.
  • Develop and maintain engineering standards, specifications and safe working procedures.
  • Review engineering drawings, technical documentation and risk assessments.
  • Advise Supervisors on the safety, reliability and performance of mechanical systems and plant.
  • Investigate equipment failures, identify root causes and implement effective corrective actions.
  • Ensure compliance with UK Mining Regulations, Health & Safety legislation and environmental standards.
  • Support the planning and implementation of preventative maintenance programmes for critical plant including:
    • Ventilation systems
    • Pumps and dewatering systems
    • Conveyors and material handling equipment
    • Surface infrastructure
    • Chillers and cooling systems
    • Pipework systems

About You:

  • A recognised Mechanical Engineering qualification (e.g. City & Guilds or equivalent), or a completed Mechanical Maintenance Engineering apprenticeship
  • Experience working within mining, heavy industry, tunnelling, construction, or large-scale infrastructure projects
  • A strong background in mechanical installation and maintenance
  • Good working knowledge of rotating equipment, pumps, hydraulics, conveyors, ventilation systems and materials handling equipment
  • Experience carrying out mechanical inspections, technical reviews and compliance audits
  • A solid understanding of preventative and reactive maintenance strategies
  • Experience undertaking risk assessments and hazard identification
  • Excellent fault-finding, diagnostic and root cause analysis skills
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
  • Good IT skills, including experience using Computer Aided Facilities Management (CAFM) or Computerised Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS)
  • A proactive approach to health, safety and environmental compliance, with a commitment to maintaining the highest engineering standards
