Mechanical Project Engineer – (Anaerobic Digestion Projects)
About Marches Biogas
Marches Biogas is based in Ludlow, Shropshire. We are the UK’s leading provider of anaerobic digestion (AD) solutions for the agriculture and waste management industries, with over 30 years of AD experience. Our services include:
- AD consultancy: DSEAR assessments, site surveys, process and equipment selection reviews
- Design and implementation of plant upgrades
- Delivery of major AD plant upgrades for clients (including water utilities)
- Mechanical, biological, and operational support for AD plants across the UK
Job Summary
The Project Engineer will support the delivery of anaerobic digestion (AD) projects from concept to commissioning. This role blends engineering expertise, project coordination, and technical oversight to ensure biogas and renewable energy facilities are designed, built, and operated safely, efficiently, and on schedule.
Collaboration with design teams, sub-contractors, equipment suppliers, and clients ensures high-quality AD projects delivered on time, on budget, and within regulations.
Key Responsibilities
📋 Project Planning & Coordination
- Develop project scopes, schedules, budgets, and resource plans for AD facility construction and upgrades
- Coordinate with internal teams, external contractors, technology providers, and regulatory bodies
- Support permitting activities, including:
- Environmental impact assessments
- Regulatory submissions
⚙️ Technical Engineering Support
- Review and interpret:
- Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs)
- P&IDs (Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams)
- Mechanical and electrical GA (General Arrangement) drawings
- Equipment specifications
- Assist in technology selection and vendor proposal evaluations

🏗️ Project Execution & Site Monitoring
- Oversee construction activities, ensuring alignment with:
- Project specifications
- Safety standards
- AD industry best practices
- Conduct on-site inspections for:
- Mechanical systems
- Civil works
- Electrical installations
- Process engineering works
- Track progress, identify risks, and develop mitigation strategies
- Ensure timely and compliant project delivery
🔍 Quality, Compliance & Safety
- Ensure compliance with AD-specific regulations:
- ATEX (Explosive Atmospheres Directive)
- DSEAR (Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations)
- Environmental permitting
- Pressure systems safety
- Perform quality checks on:
- Equipment installations
- Pipeline works
- Digestors and pumps
- Blowers and CHP (Combined Heat and Power) systems
- Biomethane systems
- Prepare documentation for:
- Commissioning
- Performance testing
- Handover procedures
💰 Procurement & Cost Management
- Assist in procuring key AD equipment, including:
- Pumps
- Mixers
- Gas upgrading units
- CHP engines
- Flare systems
- Feedstock handling equipment
- Review supplier quotations and support commercial assessments
- Monitor budgets to ensure projects stay within approved budgets
⚙️ Commissioning & Performance Support
- Support the commissioning team
- Troubleshoot process or mechanical issues during start-up and early operations

📊 Communication & Reporting
- Prepare regular project updates, including:
- Status reports
- Risk registers
- Engineering documentation
- Clearly communicate technical concepts to stakeholders (e.g., clients, non-engineering staff)
- Maintain accurate documentation, including:
- Drawings
- As-built records
Key Performance Metrics
Ensure the following are met: ✔ Accuracy of data ✔ Visual clarity of concept designs ✔ Project programme outputs (meeting deadlines) ✔ Man-hour budgets ✔ Equipment performance (meeting project requirements) ✔ Delivery on agreed programmes ✔ Alignment with manager and project team feedback ✔ Indicators of customer satisfaction
Skills & Experience
🎓 Qualifications
- BTEC/HNC in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent)
💻 Technical Skills
- Experience using Autodesk 3D and 2D CAD packages
- Ability to:
- Develop conceptual arrangement drawings
- Create high-level architectural images at proposal stages
- Detail pipework and mechanical support designs
- Adapt plans to changing project circumstances
- Follow designs from initial outline to site installation and commissioning

- Strong written and verbal communication
- Problem-solving skills
- Ability to work as a team player with autonomous initiative
🚗 Travel & Flexibility
- Willingness to travel
- Full driving licence (essential)

- Ability to work to tight deadlines
