Mechanical Project Manager
Mechanical Project Manager
Role Purpose
The Mechanical Project Manager is responsible for the safe, compliant, and commercially controlled delivery of designated mechanical projects or work packages within the Energy Department. The role provides day-to-day leadership of site delivery, programme, suppliers, supervisors, and field teams, ensuring project outputs are delivered in line with:
- Client requirements
- Contractual obligations
- MJ Quinn standards
- Relevant health, safety, quality, and environmental expectations
The postholder will act as a key operational link between:
- Client
- Project team
- Commercial function
- Suppliers
- Senior management
Providng clear reporting, early risk identification, and proactive resolution of project issues.
Key Accountabilities

Project Delivery and Programme Control
- Manage day-to-day delivery of designated mechanical projects or assigned work packages, ensuring:
- Works are planned, coordinated, and delivered safely, right first time, and to required standards.
- Take operational responsibility for:
- Site methodology
- Sequencing
- Short-term planning
- Progress monitoring
- Programme performance
- Review project information, drawings, and client-issued designs to:
- Identify buildability issues, technical queries, access constraints, and delivery risks at the earliest opportunity.
- Coordinate site activity with:
- Supervisors
- Engineers
- Suppliers
- Subcontractors
- Other trades
- To maintain progress and minimise disruption to live environments.
- Ensure project documentation, records, permits, quality checks, and handover information are:
- Complete
- Accurate
- Maintained in line with business requirements.
- Manage day-to-day delivery of designated mechanical projects or assigned work packages, ensuring:

Commercial and Contractual Control
- Work closely with the commercial team to monitor:
- Project cost
- Value
- Change
- Risk
- Forecast position.
- Identify and escalate risks that may impact:
- Budget
- Margin
- Programme
- Supplier costs
- Overhead recovery.
- Support timely provision of:
- Information for valuations
- Variations
- Compensation events
- Early warnings
- Procurement updates
- Client reporting (where applicable).
- Maintain a clear understanding of:
- Project scope
- Deliverables
- Client requirements → To reduce the risk of uncontrolled change or unrecorded additional works.
- Work closely with the commercial team to monitor:

Health, Safety, Quality and Environment
- Promote and enforce a Safety First and Right First Time culture across all site operations.
- Ensure works comply with:
- Applicable legislation
- MJ Quinn policies
- Client site rules
- Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS)
- Permits
- Project-specific controls.
- Investigate:
- Accidents
- Incidents
- Near misses
- Quality failures
- Service deterioration trends.
- Ensure corrective and preventative actions are:
- Recorded
- Closed out.
- Conduct:
- Regular site inspections
- Quality checks
- Audits to verify:
- Workmanship
- Compliance
- Housekeeping
- Safe systems of work.
- Raise, manage, and close non-conformance reports, ensuring actions are:
- Allocated
- Pursued
- Resolved.

- Allocate tasks, confirm expectations, track progress, and align resources to programme requirements.

- Support, motivate, and develop team members by:
- Setting clear standards
- Removing blockers

- Encouraging team engagement.
- Lead and coordinate:
Essential Experience, Skills and Behaviours
- Strong mechanical building services background with the ability to:
- Understand, coordinate, and manage mechanical systems installation on complex projects.
- Experience delivering mechanical projects in:
- Live, regulated, or operationally sensitive environments.
- Healthcare projects (from a mechanical perspective) is strongly advantageous.
- Strong planning, organisation, programme management, and monitoring capability.
- Commercial awareness, with experience supporting:
- Cost reporting
- Risk identification
- Change control
- Budget performance.
- Experience working with NEC3 and/or NEC4 forms of contract.
- Confident communication skills, able to engage with:
- Clients
- Senior managers
- Supervisors
- Engineers
- Suppliers
- Subcontractors.
- High standard of:
- Written and verbal communication
- Numeracy
- Computer literacy.
- Ability to:
- Prioritise workload
- Work under pressure
- Meet deadlines

- Legal right to work in the UK.
- Full UK driving licence held continuously for 12+ months, with no more than 6 points.
- Ability to pass an enhanced DBS check due to the nature of client sites visited.

Qualifications and Certifications
- Recognised building services or mechanical engineering qualification, such as:
- ONC/HNC in Building Services Engineering, or equivalent experience.
- Building Services qualification, HNC desirable.
- APM or equivalent project management qualification (desirable).
- IOSH, NEBOSH, or equivalent health and safety qualification (desirable).
