Mechanical Technician
Location: James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough, TS4 3BW
Salary: £44,500 Shift Allowance Inclusive
Schedule: Full Time, Permanent (37.5 hours per week) 8-week cycle working a mixture of days and nights (07:00 to 19:00 and 19:00 to 07:00)

As a Mechanical Technician in our Hard FM engineering team, you’ll help keep essential hospital services running safely and reliably so patients receive uninterrupted care. Your work creates meaningful, positive impact across the hospital community every single day.
You’ll join a team that maintains critical mechanical systems across a large and complex healthcare estate. It’s varied, hands-on work where your expertise keeps vital environments safe, compliant, and functioning at their best.
What you’ll do as a Mechanical Technician
You’ll be entrusted to:
- Deliver planned preventative maintenance and reactive repairs across a wide range of mechanical plant and equipment
- Maintain systems including medium temperature hot water, steam plant, pipelines, and safety devices
- Support upkeep of hot and cold-water systems, including calorifiers, storage tanks, thermostatic mixing valves and related components
- Work on specialist equipment such as medical gas systems, decontamination equipment, hydrotherapy pool systems, and ventilation or air-handling plant
- Carry out pump overhauls, equipment repairs, and system testing or balancing to maintain performance and safety
Does this sound like you?
You’ll be a great fit for this role if you have:
- A recognised Engineering Level 3 Apprenticeship or relevant structured training programme (e.g., City & Guilds or BTEC)
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience in mechanical building services within a similar environment
- Strong awareness of health and safety, with a professional and proactive approach
- Confident communication and customer-focused skills
- The ability to work effectively in high-pressure or time-sensitive situations
Vetting and checks:
A Standard DBS check will be carried out for this position. This includes spent and unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands, and warnings as permitted under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act. An Occupational Health Questionnaire will also be completed so we can ensure you have the necessary support to perform your duties.
